Tour de Summerlin
to be held April 6
Are you a bike rider? The first ever Tour de Summerlin noncompetitive bike ride through Summerlin will be held April 6. The Summerlin area is very popular for bicyclists, especially because of proximity to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Acting club presents comedy, drama
The West Flamingo Center's Acting Club, 6255 W. Flamingo Road, is scheduled to present "An Afternoon of Comedy and Drama: Part Two" April 12 at 2 p.m.
The event is free of charge but limited to 65 seats which must be reserved.
The acting club meets regularly at the center on Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and welcomes individuals who are interested in acting. A new series of classes will begin late April and registration begins Friday.

`Colore La Strada'
set for April 6
Clark County Parks and Recreation presents "Colore La Strada," an Art, Food, Music and Wine Festival at the Government Center outdoor Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway April 6 beginning at 5 p.m.
Local artists will celebrate by coloring the sidewalks with chalk in a 400-year-old tradition started in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy.
The event will feature "performance painter" Michael Israel, who has been featured on various television networks and USA Today, plus numerous publications including Time magazine, demonstrating his ability as an artist on the main stage. Immediately following the performance an auction will be held to sell the work to the highest bidder, where the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Clark County Scholarship fund.
Live music will be provided by Lil' Elmo & The Cosmos, The Reflex, Frankie and Friends from the Rat Pack and many other strolling entertainers including various stilt walkers, magicians, mimes, face painters, accordionists, sopranos and caricature artists.
The event will have educational workshops in wine tasting and food paring, a fascinating demonstration in glass blowing, an art gallery and many pieces for sale, an ice sculpture demonstration, and food for purchase.
Participants will be given the opportunity to purchase chalk and become Madonnari (street painters) for the evening.

Celebration of the Arts
scheduled for April 6-7
Celebration of the Arts Festival will be held at Village Square in Peccole Ranch, 9510 W. Sahara Ave., April 6-7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Now in its third year at The Square, this venue provides art patrons easy accessibility and plenty of parking. More than 40 artisans from across the country will present their painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, photography, fountains, glasswork, woodwork and the list goes on.
The Gardens Park, 10401 Garden Park Drive, located off Town Center Drive between Desert Inn Road and the I-215 Beltway, will be host of the art event May 4-5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This Celebration event will feature the work of more than 100 artisans with pottery, metalwork, butterfly art, woodcuts, hand-carved flutes, leather art, gourds, woodwork, sculpture, mixed media, garden art, hand-painted clothing, hand-crafted candles, soaps and body care products, hand-crafted dolls, country craft, and more. A separate section holds items children will enjoy.
Admission and parking are free. Proceeds to benefit Nevada School of the Arts.

Artist's work
featured at museum
The Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., presents the artwork of the world-famous California painter, Sam Francis. The show is named "Remaking the World" and features his works of art from 1950 to 1992. The exhibit is on display through April 21.
Francis is known as is one of the major abstract painters of the 20th century. During his lifetime, he worked in many studios: Paris, New York, Tokyo, Switzerland, and his native California.
"Sam Francis was a phenomenal artist, whose works exemplify his amazing creativity and abstract expressionism," said Marianne Lorenz, executive director for the Las Vegas Art Museum. "The LVAM is proud to display some of his wondrous paintings that communicate his energy and individuality as an artist."
General admission is $5, $3 for seniors and $2 for students. The museum's hours of operation are Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum is closed on Mondays.

Program explores
neck, arm, leg pain
West Sahara Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., will present a special program titled "New Research in Neck, Arm, & Leg Pain" April 11 at 10 a.m.

W. Charleston Library
West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd., will present author Mike Weatherford April 2, in its lecture hall at 7 p.m. He will discuss his book "Cult Vegas: The Weirdest! The Wildest! The Swingin-est Town on Earth!"
On Sunday, April 7, 2002, the lecture hall will show a film from the Jewish Heritage Film Festival. "Train of Life," directed by Radu Mihaileanu, will be shown a 1:15 p.m. Shot entirely in Romania, this film is about a shtetl that organizes a fake deportation train to escape to Palestine during World War II. The film drew large crowds when it screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
For Sunday, April 7, in the library conference room at 2 p.m., there will be a poetry reading in honor of National Poetry Month. Children of all ages are invited to participate by reading their favorite poems.
On April 9, at 6 p.m., the library, in conjunction with Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services, will host a health lecture. It will focus on key issues and concerns associated with domestic violence. Included in the presentation will be the cycle of violence, power and control issues and how domestic violence affects all family members. The Safe Nest program will be introduced as one resource to help victims of domestic violence.
West Charleston Library is also the site for a month-long exhibition called "This is Woman's Hour ... The Life of Mary Baker Eddy." The multimedia exhibit follows the life of a 19th century woman who became an author, religious leader and health reformer.

mystery discussions
The Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., holds a mystery lovers discussion group every second Tuesday and Wednesday of the month. Tuesday's meeting time is 7 p.m. Wednesday's is 10 a.m.
Follow the cases as private investigators and police detectives unravel clues and track down witnesses, all with a few red herrings thrown in for good measure.
For those interested in both fiction and nonfiction, a discussion group meets the last Thursday of every month at 7 p.m.

Toastmasters meeting
open to public
Want to feel comfortable with public speaking? Curtain Call Toastmasters, a humor and drama public speaking club, meets at West Sahara Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The group is interested in expanding its membership.
Newcomers do not need to be prepared to speak, and need no formal training in public speaking. The club is part of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit group.
