`Big Dig' exhibit
opens Saturday
A commemorative exhibit, "The Big Dig: The Tule Springs Expedition 1962-1963," will open at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society with a special presentation Saturday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The museum is located at 700 Twin Lakes Drive in Lorenzi Park.
The exhibit tells the story of the "Big Dig," using photographs, mammoth remains, stone tools and other artifacts found during the expedition. The exhibit will run through October 2003.
The public is invited to the opening-day program, where dig participants will share their experiences and slides with the audience. Scheduled speakers include project director Richard Shutler Jr., geologist C. Vance Haynes, and archaeologists Robert Orlins and Margaret Lyneis. Representing the Tule Springs Preservation Committee will be Don White and Mark Rosenzweig.

MUSIC
LV Philharmonic
to perform Nov. 16
The Las Vegas Philharmonic, under the direction of Music Director Harold Weller, will perform works by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Camille Saint-Saens and Jan Sibelius on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. at the Artemus Ham Concert Hall on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, campus.
The concert will feature Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake Ballet Suite," Saint-Saens' sensuous "Symphony No. 3" ("Organ"), and Sibelius' "Concerto for Violin & Orchestra."
Guest artist De Ann Letourneau will join the Philharmonic for this second concert of the 2002-03 season.
Tickets are $60, $40 and $20, and can be purchased by calling the UNLV Performing Arts Box Office, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by calling 895-ARTS (2787). Face of Fitness
search under way
The first Face of Fitness model search is being conducted now through Jan. 15.
The winner will receive a five-year modeling contract, a trip to New York for a photo shoot and an appearance in a fitness magazine.
Entrants are requested to send one or two recent photographs and a $20 entry fee. A 100-word essay on why yours is the face of fitness is optional. The search is open to women at least 18.

Film company seeks
talent for production
An independent film company, CircusPopcorn Films, is conducting a national talent search for its new movie "The Road to Vegas."
The company is seeking individuals nationwide interested in working on the movie project. The film will be shot in a semidocumentary style. Filming will take place in a number of cities across the nation. Film production is being scheduled to take
place next year.

Palms offers chance
to female singers
Due to its success, the Palms resort, 4321 W. Flamingo Road, is extending Chick Singer Night, an opportunity for female vocalists to show off their talent. CSN is held the first Monday of each month at 8 p.m. in the Palapa Lounge.
Women with a variety of singing experience are invited to take the stage at the lounge for one song. It's not quite an open microphone; each singer must audition on Monday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a chance to perform later that evening. CSN is open to the public and is free of charge.

animal adoptions
Clark County residents can now use a mouse to find a pet -- a computer mouse, that is. Nevada SPCA, Las Vegas Basset Rescue, Southern Nevada Samoyed Rescue & Referral and Knoah's Ark have joined 27 other organizations as members of petfinder.com.
The Web site service, which is free to potential adopters, facilitated more than half a million pet adoptions last year.

Drama season takes
the stage Nov. 21
Jade Productions announces its 2002-2003 theater season.
"And the World Goes 'Round" will be performed at the Summerlin Performing Arts Center, 1771 Inner Circle Drive, Nov. 21-26. Thursday through Tuesday shows begin at 8 p.m.; Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
The Musical "Working" will be performed at the Summerlin Performing Arts Center from Jan. 31 through Feb. 16. Thursday through Saturday nights at 8; Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
Finally, "Songs of Broadway" will be presented at the Summerlin Performing Arts Center, March 8 at 8 p.m. That night will mark the Jade and Friends gala fund-raiser. All shows will feature the Pat Demain Band.

Hospital to offer
cardiac nutrition class
Mountain View Hospital, 3100 N. Tenaya Way, will offer "Diabetes and You," a free community health eduction program, Nov. 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
That presentation will include risk factors, signs and symptoms, and lifestyle modifications associated with diabetes. All attendees will receive a free Accu-Chek diabetes monitoring kit at the end of class.

Las Vegas Odyssey
set for Nov. 14-17
Audi will present the third annual Las Vegas Odyssey, a celebration of wine, food, and art at different locations Nov. 14-17. The annual four-day series of wine tastings, dinners and cooking demonstrations will go beyond the traditional, hosted at some of the city's top-notch restaurants, hotels and museum.
Ten of Las Vegas' renowned chefs will be featured at the Nov. 16 Masters Dinner and Live Auction, which will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
