BASEBALL

Academy planning

clinics for youth

The Las Vegas Baseball Academy has scheduled hitting and pitching clinics April 12 to 14 at the Boys & Girls Club West, located at 2850 S. Lindell Road.

The clinics are open to ages 7 to 14, with the hitting session slated from 9 to 11 a.m. and the pitching session scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Those interested can call 256-7084 or visit lvbaseballacademy.com.

Academy to host

holiday tourneys

The Las Vegas Baseball Academy has scheduled three tournaments, starting with a Memorial Day Tournament-Super Series Qualifier on May 24-26.

The top four teams in each age group will qualify for a summer nationals invitation. The registration fee is $425 per team and the event is open to ages 14 and younger.

LPGA event

needs volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the LPGA Takefuji Classic, which is scheduled to take place at the Las Vegas Country Club April 14 to 19.

Volunteers are provided with lunch on the days they volunteer and an extra weekly grounds pass. Volunteers are needed for several positions, including marshals, standard bearers, television spotters, microphone carriers and more.

Junior golfers

improve skills

Close to 140 golfers, ages 7 to 12, weathered the rain and cold recently to participate, for free, in The Golf Channel's Drive, Chip & Putt Junior Golf Skills Competition at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Eighteen prizes were awarded in each age group -- one each to the top five in driving, chipping and putting, as well as the top three rankings for best, combined performance.

Connor Bodin, 7, of Las Vegas, placed third in the ages 7-8 group; Mark Augustin, 9, of Las Vegas won the 9-10 age group, with Ryan Baeza, 9, of Mesquite, in second place; and Brett Yee, 10, of Las Vegas in third. Nicholas Roman, 11, of Las Vegas, won the ages 11-12 group, with Marcus Nolasco, 12, of Las Vegas, in second place.

The top three in each age group advance to a regional event in Simi Valley, Calif., with a chance to advance to the national championships in November.

Golf fund-raiser

set for April 25

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada has scheduled The Big Golf Classic April 25 at Silverstone Golf Club.

Entry fees are $500 per person, or $2,000 for a foursome, and include a continental breakfast, luncheon buffet and awards ceremony.

Gambler Classic

to help juniors

The Las Vegas Gambler Golf Classic, which will benefit the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association, is slated for June 14 and 15 at Stallion Mountain Country Club.

Junior tour

taking applications

The First Tee of Southern Nevada's Southern Nevada Junior Golf Tour Program is accepting applications for membership. The fee for the year-round program, open to players ages 6 to 17, is $80.

Two levels of play are offered -- advanced, for the experienced golfer able to play tournament golf (18 holes); and recreational, for the golfer learning to play tournament golf (nine holes). Those interested in the SNJGA Tour can visit snjga.org or call 433-0626.

Annual CASA tourney

set for April 21

The Court Appointed Special Advocate Foundation has scheduled its annual golf tournament April 21 at Canyon Gate Country Club. A shotgun start is slated for 7:45 a.m., and the four-person scramble is open to the public.

The entry fee is $225 per person; $800 per foursome, and includes a Continental breakfast, a buffet lunch, awards and prizes. Non-golfers also can donate $25 for the luncheon and festivities. The deadline to register is April 11. Those interested can call 455-4306.

Cystic Fibrosis center

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has scheduled its eighth annual Corporate Golf Classic May 5 at the Las Vegas Country Club.

A barbecue awards luncheon and raffle will follow the tournament, which will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Care and Research Center. Those interested in playing and/or making a donation can call Mary Merritt at 383-8500.

NLV Chamber

ready to scramble

The sixth annual North Las Vegas Chamber Foundation Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 13 at the Painted Desert Golf Club.

Volunteers needed

for LVI tourney

Volunteers are needed for the 21st annual Las Vegas Invitational golf tournament. All volunteers, who must be older than 18, must pay a $25 fee to defray expenses, but in return they'll receive a volunteer badge to enter the event all five days, a season badge for a guest ($50 value), donuts, coffee and lunch, discounts on clothing and memorabilia, special promotions, admittance to a party after the final round and more.

Tom Carlson's Junior Golf Association, located at the Craig Ranch Golf Course, is now accepting junior golfers for its introductory and advanced classes.

SOFTBALL

Senior women's

team needs players

Several senior women's softball teams are looking for players.

There are three teams for 45-and-older players, as well as a 55-and-older team, a 60-and-older team and a 65-and-older squad.

The year-round teams compete in local and national tournaments. There is also a recreational city women's league and a game at Sun City Summerlin on Saturday mornings for all levels of players.

Community center

offers leagues, clubs

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada offers a wide range of activities, including summer and fall bowling leagues; a hiking club; and yoga classes.

Summer bowling starts June 12. The hiking club's next hike is scheduled for Sunday. Yoga is offered from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, located at 101 S. Pavilion.

Champs Youth Basketball is offering registration for its Spring League. Champs is open to boys and girls of all skill levels, ages 8 to 18 or grades three through 12, on both sides of town. All games are announced, awards are presented at every game, and contests are also featured.

ADVENTURE

Urban challenge

to hit Vegas April 12

The National Prostate Cancer Coalition has partnered with Urban Challenge, an urban adventure sport, to raise prostate cancer awareness throughout the country.

Urban Challenge, which is scheduled to kick off a 22-city national tour in Las Vegas, April 12, features two-person teams that work in tandem to find and visit 12 checkpoints on the unrehearsed city landscape. Top teams from each city qualify for the national championships in New Orleans in November, with a chance to win the $50,000 grand prize.

Durango YMCA

offering leagues

The Durango Hills YMCA offers several youth sports leagues, including flag football, roller hockey and basketball.
