EVENTS

Astronomical Society

plans Mars celebration

The Astronomical Society of Nevada, Las Vegas, is scheduled to launch a Mars Day Celebration on Wednesday at the Galleria at Sunset mall. The organization, a local offshoot of the national organization started by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman in 1980, has planned a free, public event from 3 to 11 p.m.

The planet is on a trajectory that will bring it the closest it's been to the Earth in more than 50,000 years. Mars will be especially visible because its orbit will be closest both to the Earth and the sun. For more information, visit www.asnlv.org.

Designer to show

line of watches

Charlotte Jorst, award-winning designer and co-owner of Skagen Designs, is showcasing her fall and winter line of watches with a one-day show on Saturday. The event will be at the new Accessories & More II store in the Colonnade Square Shopping Center at Eastern Avenue and Pebble Road, and her only Southern Nevada stop.

A native of Copenhagen, Denmark, Jorst and her husband, Henrik, came to the United States 13 years ago. They began their own business, at first designing simple watches to sell to corporate clients and then launching their own brand, Skagen Designs. They have offices in Reno and Copenhagen. The Jorsts recently moved from the East Coast to live in Reno.
