Red Cross offers
disaster-ready class
American Red Cross of Southern Nevada, 3672 N. Rancho Drive, has slated a Get Hometown Response-Ready orientation class for today, 1 to 5 p.m.
Participants will gain knowledge in how they can prepare for and respond to any type of disaster as well as learn how to build a disaster kit and make a disaster plan.
They will also learn how to respond to emergencies and administer life saving skills until help arrives.

Civil War buffs focus on American Indians
The Las Vegas Civil War Round Table is slated to present Indians in the Civil War, by speaker Kevin Anderson tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. 4140 W. Reno Ave.
Anderson, a high school teacher, plans to cover American Indian uprisings in Minnesota and Colorado. The group normally meets at libraries but this talk will be held at one of the member's businesses, J & R Flooring Inc. The location is best accessed from Arville Street just south of Tropicana. A seminar titled Human Resources for the Non-HR Professional is slated to be held at the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, 3720 Howard Hughes Parkway, Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This session is especially designed for managers, supervisors, team leaders with supervisory responsibilities, office managers, entry-level human resource professionals, experienced or not.

`Fractured Fairy Tales'
Sierra Vista High School, 8100 W. Robindale Road, is slated to present "Funny, Fractured Fairy Tales" May 15-16 at 7 p.m.
The production consists of three one-act plays: "Incantation, The Frog Prince Fairy Tale;" "Rappin' Stiltskin;" and "Sonoma and the Seven Dolts."

Singer-songwriter
coming to church
Renown comedic spiritual singer and songwriter, Kevin Benedict, will bring his dazzling, hilarious, talents to First Church of Religious Science, 1420 Harmon Ave., a half mile east of Maryland Parkway, May 18 at 6 p.m. Cost is $15.
He will also conduct a Master Voice Workshop focusing on breathing and singing techniques for singers. The workshop starts at 12:30 p.m. and costs $20.
Also, award-winning soloist soloist with the Agape International Choir, Jami Lula will perform June 8th at 2 p.m. Cost is $15.

to gather in June
Reclaim yesterday, if only for one night. The annual Las Vegas High School Wildcat Reunion is slated to take place June 14 at Sam's Town beginning at 5 p.m.
A buffet dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a no-host bar.

healthy living class
Valley Hospital, 620 Shadow Lane, has slated The Gift of Healthy Living -- Enjoy Life Again, a free class designed for those living with a chronic health condition such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis or any ongoing health concern. There are age restrictions. Family members are urged to attend.
The six-week session will take place Mondays, beginning next week and continuing through June 16 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Valley Hospital. Call 388-4665 for more information.

Red Rock cleanup
seeks volunteers
Red Rock National Conservation Area holds programs and informative hikes each month.
On Saturday, it's slated to hold Astronomy Day offered in conjunction with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society.
The LVAS will be at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center with telescopes and solar filters. Come look and the sun. They will be discussing astronomy and answering any questions you may have.
That evening, Astronomy Evening Program- Introduction to Astronomy is also scheduled. The gate will close at 8:30 p.m.

Candlelighters plan
annual fun run
Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer of Southern Nevada has scheduled its 13th Annual 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk at Cashman Field, Saturday. The first race starts at 7:30 a.m. The event is being held in memory of Jared Barney and Jason York, both of whom lost their battle with childhood cancer.

Reggae festival
coming to UNLV
The Second Annual Las Vegas Legends of Rasta Reggae is slated to be held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas soccer field Saturday and Sunday, noon to 11 p.m.
Admission: $8 pre-sale with service charge, and $10 the day of show. Couples are $15 at the gate. Opportunity Village has partnered with local radio station Lite 100.5-FM and morning personality Melanie to open Melanie's Closet, a new boutique area of its thrift store. The ever-changing offering of items may include sequined jackets, silk tops and beaded purses.
