COACHING

Gladiators to hold

inaugural clinic

The Las Vegas Gladiators coaching staff has scheduled the inaugural Arena Coaches Clinic for Dec. 8-10 in Las Vegas. Other Arena Football League coaches will also take part in the clinic, which will be followed by an open tryout.

The cost of the clinic, which includes lunch and hotel stay for three days and two nights at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, is $160 for double occupancy in a hotel room or $200 for single occupancy. Las Vegas player

wins Ironman Award

The Las Vegas Gladiators, in partnership with News 3's Operation Football, awarded Stanley Copeland of Las Vegas High School the Gladiators' Ironman Award for week six of the 2004 season.

Copeland, a senior wide receiver/kicker, led the Wildcats to a 68-14 win over Chaparral. He finished with 96 yards on two punt returns, two receptions for 22 yards and one touchdown, three solo tackles, two assisted tackles and eight point after touchdowns. Copeland, who has a 3.62 grade-point average, scored 10 touchdowns and converted 22 PATs in the first six games (6-0) for top-ranked Las Vegas.

Copeland was presented a plaque for winning the award, which recognizes student-athletes who excel on the playing field and in the classroom.

CHARITY

Motorcycle run to

aid animal foundation

The NASCAR Cafe, in conjunction with the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson Motorcycle dealership, has scheduled its 2003 "Dogs and Hogs" charity motorcycle run Nov. 3, with donations to benefit the Las Vegas Animal Foundation.

The festivities are slated to start with a Pet Adopt-A-Thon at Las Vegas Harley-Davidson and, at noon, the motorcycle riders, led by Grand Marshals and NASCAR standouts Bobby Labonte, Kyle Petty and Rusty Wallace, will take off on a route that leads them across Hoover Dam to Kingman, Ariz., to Laughlin and back to the Las Vegas Strip, where the run will finish at the NASCAR Cafe at the Sahara.

The registration fee is $100 for single riders and $150 for couples and includes a spot in the run, an official T-shirt and an invitation to the exclusive party after the run. Cancer Climb

set for Nov. 15

The second HERA Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the PowerHouse Climbing Center, located at 8201 W. Charleston Blvd. The event, also presented by Desert Rock Sports, will feature a hike for life in Red Rock, led by Sky's the Limit Guide Service.

The registration fee, which includes climbing gear, is $20 to climb or hike, or $35 to participate in both activities. Participants will maneuver indoor climbing routes that are assigned a point value in feet, and prizes will be awarded to men and women in three categories. Proceeds will benefit the HERA Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

Palo Verde club

schedules orientation

The Palo Verde Lacrosse Club has scheduled a parent/player lacrosse orientation at 9 a.m. Nov. 8 at Oxford Park, located behind Bonner Elementary School in Summerlin. A high school boys team is being formed, along with a girls team (for girls 12 years old to 12th graders) and a middle school boys team. Coaches and parent volunteers are also needed.

Rally for A Cure

set for Tuesday

A Rally for A Cure breast cancer awareness golf event and business networking reception is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Greens of Las Vegas, located at 4813 S. Paradise Road, near Tropicana Avenue, with a long putt contest slated to start at 7 p.m.

Gorman Classic

slated for Rio Secco

The Bishop Gorman High School Golf Classic is scheduled for Nov. 17 at the Rio Secco Golf Club.

Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start set for 10 a.m. Tee prizes include Nike jackets, with a hole-in-one prize a 2004 Lincoln Aviator.

The registration fee is $375 per golfer and includes team buy-in, mulligans, buy-in for hole prizes and a barbecue. Tee marker sponsorships are also available, for $100 apiece. Those interested can call 732-1945, Ext. 328 or 363.

Junior academy

Tom Carlson's Higher Education Golf's Junior Academy is now accepting junior golfers for its introductory and advanced classes.

The First Tee of Southern Nevada ensures that participants learn the fundamentals of golf and its inherent values by providing accessible and affordable golf experiences, including the life skills curriculum-based "Golf Fore Kids" Development program, the "SNJGA Tour" Competitive Tournament Program, and the "Driving the Dream" Scholarship Program for Higher Education.

Ladies Only event

Champs accepts

players for fall

Champs youth basketball is now accepting registration for its fall basketball leagues. The leagues are open to players of all skill levels, in grades three through 12. All games are announced, there are halftime shootouts and trivia contests and MVP and Champs awards for every game.

The national director is Steve Boyack, head coach at Cimarron-Memorial High School, while the local directors are former high school coaches Thad Simmons and Tom Hughes.

The Las Vegas Competitive Basketball League is for individuals of all skill levels, in grades kindergarten through 12.

All league games will take place at Home Courts in Henderson, a new state-of-the-art complex featuring nine full-size basketball courts.

A Nike Competitive Basketball League, for boys and girls teams in grades two through 12, is also slated to take place at Home Courts. Both leagues are scheduled to start Saturday, with a Nike Thanksgiving Classic Tournament scheduled from Nov. 28-30.

Showcase open

to young players

The UNLV Thanksgiving Showcase Camp is scheduled Nov. 22 and 23 for baseball players ages 10-18.

The camp will include sessions on hitting and position play, along with live games, in front of the camp staff, which includes University of Nevada, Las Vegas, coaches, pro scouts and high school coaches.

UNLV has also scheduled a four-day Holiday Camp, with the Holiday Hitting Camp slated for Dec. 27 and 28 and the Holiday Position Camp scheduled Dec. 29 and 30. Both holiday camps are open to ages 7-18.
