RUGBY

Sin City Irish club

looking for players

The Sin City Irish Rugby Football Club is looking for new players, of all ages, as well as social members, for its 2004 season, slated to start in January.

The club is scheduled to play against teams from Arizona, Utah and California during its season. Practice recently started and takes place Tuesday and Thursday at Pommel Park, near Eastern Ave. and Russell Rd.

BASKETBALL

Tarkanian academy

plans girls' clinic

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will present the Katy Steding Clinic, for girls ages 10-14, from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at Johnson Middle School. The cost of the clinic is $60 per player and those interested can call 610-3853.

Steding helped lead the United States to a gold medal in the 1996 Olympic Games and was also a member of Stanford University's NCAA Champions in 1990. A first-round pick in the 2000 WNBA draft, she played for the Sacramento Monarchs and Seattle Storm. Steding is now the head coach at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Ore.

Fund-raiser set

to benefit Child Haven

A local karate club, Nevada Traditional Shotokan Karate, has scheduled its third annual Kicks for Kids fund-raising event, with all of the proceeds to benefit Child Haven, Clark County's shelter for abused, neglected and abandoned children.

The event, in which students will execute kicks for 15 minutes, with pledges for each kick, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday) at the Las Vegas Dance Theatre Studio, located at 3248 Civic Center Drive in North Las Vegas.

Gladiators schedule

dance team tryouts

The Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena Football League have scheduled auditions for the 2004 Gladiator Girls Dance Team on the Brooklyn Bridge at New York-New York from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8, with finalists advancing to a final audition and interview Nov. 11.

Applicants will be taught several routines for the preliminary audition and will be judged on dance ability, crowd appeal, showmanship, individual resumes and personality. Participants must wear appropriate dance shoes and attire (no baggy clothes). A $30 processing fee is due at the door and approximately 14 participants will be chosen for the final squad.

Gorman player

wins Ironman Award

Ryan Reynolds of Bishop Gorman High School recently received the Gladiators' Ironman Award, from the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena Football League, in partnership with News 3's Operation: Football.

Reynolds, a linebacker/fullback, led the Gaels to a 38-0 win over Sierra Vista Oct. 10, with four carries for 129 yards, 18 tackles and an interception return for a touchdown. Reynolds, who has a 3.4 grade-point average, helped lead the Gaels to a 5-2 record and the No. 4 ranking in the Las Vegas Review-Journal's prep football rankings.

RACING

Drifting exhibition

comes to Speedway

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will introduce the latest automotive craze -- drifting -- to Las Vegas with a special exhibition Nov. 7. The exhibition, which will take place during Midnight Mayhem, will launch a six-event points series in 2004.

Drifting consists of racing on a specially designed road course while trying to maintain a controlled slide. Racers are judged on their lap times and sliding ability.

SKATING

Vegas Speed Team

wins in Long Beach

Several members of the Vegas Speed Team, a local inline speedskating team, fared well in the recent Long Beach City Bank International Inline Marathon.

Mallory Pracale won the Pro Women race in 1 hour, 18 minutes over a 26.2-mile course through the streets of Long Beach, Calif.

Erin Frame placed second in her age group, in the advanced category, and Christina Danai took third.

Mindy Miller, LeVar Maxwell, Alicia Miller, Sammy Mahar and Lili Simon all finished first in their respective age groups, in the fitness recreation category, and Cortney Miller took third. More than 1,500 racers competed in the event.

COACHING

Gladiators to hold

inaugural clinic

The Las Vegas Gladiators coaching staff has scheduled the inaugural Arena Coaches Clinic for Dec. 8-10 in Las Vegas. Other Arena Football League coaches will also take part in the clinic, which will be followed by an open tryout.

The cost of the clinic, which includes lunch and hotel stay for three days and two nights at the MGM Grand is $160 for double occupancy in a hotel room or $200 for single occupancy. Those interested can call Gladiators defensive coordinator Stan Davis at 702-731-4977 or visit www.ArenaCoach.com.

CHARITY

Cancer Climb

set for Nov. 15

The second HERA Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the PowerHouse Climbing Center, located at 8201 W. Charleston Blvd. The event, also presented by Desert Rock Sports, will feature a hike for life in Red Rock, led by Sky's the Limit Guide Service.

The registration fee, which includes climbing gear, is $20 to climb or hike, or $35 to participate in both activities. Proceeds will benefit the HERA Ovarian Cancer Foundation.
