Favorite Sons & Daughters
View welcomes announcements of recent achievements of Favorite Sons & Daughters who have graduated from local high schools. Achievements may run the gamut from earning a college degree to successfully climbing Mount Everest. Please include the name of the area high school and year graduated. Elizabeth Ashbaugh, a student at Coronado High School, recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. The conference is a leadership development program that lets high school students interact with today's leaders. Students are chosen based on scholastic merit, community involvement and leadership contributions. Ashbaugh was also recently named a Commended Student in the 2004 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Stephanie Hartman, a student at Centennial High School, recently received the first annual Mary Angela DiGiovanni Beacon of Light award from the Greater Las Vegas Inner-City Games. Hartman received a plaque and a $1000 stipend for her dedication and service to the community.
Cody Smith, a junior at Silverado High School, recently won both the California NORBA Mountain Bike Cross Country and Downhill state championships in the 18 and under division. This is only the second time that the same person has won state titles in both disciplines in the same year. Smith is the son of Eddie and Sheri Vigil.
Joel B. Worfolk, Navy Chief Petty Officer, graduated from Western High School in Las Vegas. Worfolk recently reported for duty with Strike Fighter Squadron 94, Naval Air Station in Lemoore Calif. He is the son of Linda J. Carman of Las Vegas.
