Las Vegas Breakfast Club to meet
The Las Vegas Breakfast Club will hold its monthly meeting on Sunday, April 18, 2004, at the American Legion Hall, 425 Van Wagenen in Henderson. The speaker will be Omar Sofradzija, author of the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Road Warrior column since 2003. He will speak about the new monorail system. Breakfast will be served from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and the meeting will begin at 11 a.m. For more information, call 243-0293.
Vendors needed for women's expo
The Las Vegas Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center is seeking vendors for its second biannual All for Women Expo. The event is set for April 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will feature products and services just for women. The center staff is looking for vendors in of health, food, fashion, fitness, career, jewelry, finance, entertainment, crafts, home, family and more. Vendors can rent space for $50 or $75, depending on location. Spaces are limited to 60. The Leisure Center is located in Summerlin at 101 Pavilion Center Drive (west of Town Center, north of Charleston). For more information, call Denise at 229-1108.
Scholarship benefit to be held April 18
The Augustus society will hold its annual scholarship dinner April 18 at Russell's Restaurant, 3200 E. Cheyenne on the campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada. The featured speaker will be Paul Gianini, interim president of the college. To date, over $500,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Italian-American students in Nevada. Vocal Jazz Solo Night planned
The Community College of Southern Nevada's version of "American Idol" will be presented on April 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the Little Theater on the Cheyenne Campus, when members of the CCSN Jazz Singers present their Vocal Jazz Solo Night. Each member of the group will perform a wide range of material including jazz standards, the blues and musical theater. The Jazz Singers, under the direction of Mark Wherry, also will perform selections from their ensemble repertoire. The group and soloists will be accompanied by the Mike Montano Trio.
The Little Theatre is located on the Cheyenne Campus at 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., east of Interstate 15. Admission is $5. For more information and reservations, call 651-5483.
Easter party planned for children
An Easter celebration for kids called The Rock That Rolled Party is set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Calvary Community Assembly of God, 2900 N. Torrey Pines Drive, one block south of Cheyenne. Activities include an egg hunt, face painting, balloons, crafts, bounce house and lots of Easter treats. Admission is free. Hotel and restaurant show ready to go
On April 14 and 15, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, the Las Vegas International Hotel & Restaurant Show is offering a Career Fair to provide resources for students looking for employment in hospitality. Show hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 14 on Wednesday, and 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 15on Thursday. Students also will have the chance to join a tour of the back-of-the-house of three major hotel-casinos. Located on the show floor, the Career Fair will be open throughout the show. Free wine testing open to public
Great Wines International is presenting a free festival of Chilean, Austrian and South African wines Tuesday April 13, at 6:30 p.m., in Cosmo's Restaurant, at Lake Las Vegas. Great Wines International's president Jeromy Wilkinson, Cosmo's chef Joseph Keller, and Sandy Zimmerman will discuss how to select international wines and food pairing suggestions followed by wine tasting. Neon show will continue to glow
Because of popular demand, the Neon Unplugged: Signs from the Boneyard exhibit at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society has been extended through June 27. The exhibit originally was scheduled to close Feb. 22.
"This has been one of the most popular exhibits the museum has seen," said Greta Brunschwyler, museum director. "People are continually stopping in and asking to see the signs." The exhibit features historic signs from Las Vegas' past stored outdoors in a neon boneyard, photos and an interactive technology exhibit that shows how the signs' colors are created. The museum, located at 700 Twin Lakes Drive, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for children under 17. For more information, call 486-5205.
Artist Vina Curtis in spring show
The Henderson Art Association will present its Spring Art Exhibit April 12 - Monday through June 7, at the Lake Las Vegas Reflection Bay Golf Club, 75 MiraLago Blvd., in Henderson. The featured artist will be watercolorist Vina Curtis. Las Vegas offers kids arts camp
Registration opens April 10 for TACK, the annual Arts Connection Kamp offered by the Cultural Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services. The eight-week-long camp is held Monday through Friday, June 7 through July 30, for children ages 7-12, at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. The full-day camp ($550), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers a full morning of theater classes, taught by staff from the award-winning Rainbow Company Youth Theatre, and a variety of dance and visual arts classes in the afternoon.
Participants also will attend three performances of the Children's Summer Concert Series in July. Early drop-off and late pick-up are available. Parents must provide sack lunches and snacks. Children also may enroll in the half day ($300) session in either the morning, 9 a.m. to noon, or afternoon, 1 to 4 p.m. Scholarships, multiple family member discounts and flexible payment plans are available. UNLV IT hosts open houses
The UNLV IT Academy will have open houses Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. April 21 and May 5 and 19. The open houses will provide information sessions about the UNLV Technology certification programs, including the MCSE, A+, Network+, Visual Basics, MCSA , MCDBA and MCSD.NET. Individuals will have the chance to meet and visit with the instructor and former students, view course material and visit the lab. There is no fee to attend the sessions. Salvation Army needs food funds
The Salvation Army is asking for donations to its food fund. Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn has announced he will match funds through a national challenge grant. Donations received between now and April 30 will be eligible for the matching funds program. To make a tax-deductible donation, contact the Salvation Army at 870-4430 ext. 23 or ext. 29.
