Favorite Sons & Daughters



View welcomes announcements of recent achievements of Favorite Sons & Daughters who have graduated from local high schools. Achievements may run the gamut from earning a college degree to successfully climbing Mount Everest. Please include the name of the area high school and year graduated. William S. Chairsell, Marine Corps 1st Lt., a 1995 graduate of Bonanza High School, recently returned from a routine, scheduled deployment on board the USS Peleliu, homeported in San Diego, while assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif. During the deployment, Chairsell's unit conducted humanitarian assistance, security and stabilization missions in Iraq. They also patrolled international waters in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa to deter the transport of terrorist personnel and equipment.

Michael C. Douglas, Navy Seaman Recruit, son of Valerie V. Douglas of Las Vegas, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Douglas completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. Douglas is a 2003 graduate of Chaparral High School of Las Vegas.

David A. Garner, Navy Petty Officer, son of Janene L. and David A. Garner of Las Vegas, recently returned from a routine, scheduled deployment while assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea, homeported in Mayport, Fla. Garner is one of more than 6,500 Sailors and Marines aboard the ships of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group who deployed in support of America's ongoing operations in the war on terrorism. Garner joined the Navy in April 1992.

Heather M. Porritt, Navy Seaman Apprentice, a 2002 graduate of Silverado High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Porritt completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Damon M. Prellwitz, Navy Seaman, son of Francis A. and Michael A. Saalfeld of Las Vegas, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Prellwitz completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. Prellwitz is a 2003 graduate of Bonanza High School.
