Grant to keep summer shelter open
Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada received a $48,000 grant from United Way to help keep its Summer Day Shelter open through Sept. 30.
The summer shelter helps homeless during the hottest days of the year, providing shelter, water and bathrooms to 100 men at Catholic Charities' St. Vincent Plaza at 1504 N. Main St.
"In this extreme heat, it's urgent that we respond to the needs of our homeless population," said Dan Goulet, president of United Way of Southern Nevada.

United Way of Southern Nevada has received a $125,000 corporate gift from Mandalay Resort Group to support the charity's second Success By 6 neighborhood center to be housed in Williams Elementary School.
Success By 6 is designed to help children succeed by developing three building blocks for learning: literacy, safety and health.
DEVELOPMENT
City seeks ideas for Union Park area
Fourteen developers from around the country have received requests for proposals from the city of Las Vegas for the development of 61 acres west of downtown. The developers have been asked to submit ideas for developing the "Union Park" in the area.
The companies have 30 days to respond. A panel of city staff and other stakeholders will recommend one of the developers to the city council.
The city council also approved two high-rise residential developments, including the $38 million, 21-story Liberty Towers at 1801 S. Las Vegas Blvd. and the $275 million, 39-story mixed-use development at 200 W. Sahara Ave.
"We have been talking about the Manhattanization of downtown Las Vegas for years, and it's finally happening," said Mayor Oscar Goodman.
