TRANSPORTATION

Road to be closed for parkway project

The Nevada Department of Transportation has announced that a portion of St. Rose Parkway is scheduled to be closed from Friday to Tuesday. The closure will be in both directions between Paseo Verde Parkway and Jeffreys Street from 9 p.m. Friday to no later than 5 a.m. on Tuesday for reconstruction of the intersection as part of the St. Rose widening project.

Detours around the area include using Pecos Road to Pebble Road to Eastern Avenue to Jeffreys Street. Eastern Avenue is scheduled to remain open with two lanes of travel in each direction crossing the parkway. However, no turns will be permitted in the Eastern Avenue and St. Rose Parkway intersection. NDOT strongly advises using an alternate route during this construction period.

CHARITY

Volunteers to be locked up for charity

Locals are scheduled to voluntarily submit to jail time today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in a mock cell at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Those imprisoned are charged with finding sponsors to donate money to bail them out. The money raised will be used to help those assisted by the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas. To participate in the lock up, call Sarah Lautman at 252-4663 extension 3.

SAFETY

Children's DNA sampling offered

The DNA LifePrint Kit, endorsed by John Walsh of Fox's "America's Most Wanted," is scheduled to be available at a safety program slated for March 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ensign Federal Credit Union, 1300 Warm Springs Road.

The non-invasive procedure involves swabbing a child's cheek with an applicator. This captures the child's DNA in a vial, which is then given to the parent with no records kept by the sponsors. The sample can be used to help identify the child in the event of an abduction. Those interested in more information can go on the Internet to www.dna-lifeprint.com.
