Lifestyles Expo set for Thursday

The Summerlin Lifestyles Expo is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Suncoast.

It's a chance to sample food, get health tips and learn about new products. There will be drawings for prizes, items will be raffled off and free mini-workshops will be offered.

Concert series continues tonight

A concert is scheduled at 8 p.m. tonight at Las Vegas Little Theatre, 3844 Schiff Drive, in The Center at Spring Mountain.

Recording artist Tish Hinojosa is slated to perform her internationally acclaimed music in this, the third of the Acoustic Routes Concert Series.

Mini-fair planned for youth mentors

The Nevada Youth Alliance and the Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada is slated to host a mini-fair Thursday called "Mentoring Above and Beyond 2004."

It's for anyone interested in working as a mentor for youth or adults.

The fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Grant Sawyer Government Center's Personnel Training Room, 555 E. Washington Blvd.

Author Kovacs to sign books

A book signing is scheduled for 7 :30 p.m. Thursday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 8195 W. Charleston Blvd. Author Betty Kovacs, Ph.D., will be on hand to promote her book "The Miracle of Death."

The book deals with a family whose understanding was expanded through precognitive dreams, visions and synchronistic events when a member was nearing death. It weaves personal experiences with cutting-edge research to support a radical change in the way we perceive death.

`Time After Time'

to be performed

Jade Productions Inc., a local nonprofit theater company, is slated to present Robert Mattera's thriller play, "Time After Time" at Summerlin Library Performing Arts Center, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.

The show runs Friday through Feb. 8, Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

The play features H.G. Wells stalking Jack the Ripper across time itself.

Tickets are $17.50 for adults, $15 for seniors and students and $13.50 for children younger than 12. Seats are reserved.

Black History Month

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District has scheduled various events for Black History Month. "Home," an award-winning play by Samm-Art Williams, the producer of TV's "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" is slated to be shown 2 p.m. Feb. 21 at Summerlin Library, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.

"People Can Fly," an adventure told through narrative, song and dance, is slated for 1 p.m. Feb. 3 at West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.; 10 a.m. Feb. 17 at Summerlin Library; 1 p.m. Feb. 17 at Rainbow Library, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive; 10 a.m. Feb. 23 at Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.; and 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd.

A two-day event, "Remembering the Freedoms," will include art, plays, dance and film. It is slated for Feb. 7 and 8 at West Charleston Library, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Call 734-READ for more information.

`Singing Scientist'

to entertain kids

Flumpa returns. Wendy Whitten, the "singing scientist" is scheduled to delight young children at area libraries with her musical program featuring frog character Flumpa.

Heart Association

to hold ball

The American Heart Association has slated its annual Heart of Gold Ball for 6 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Rio.

The fund-raiser is expected to generate $250,000 in proceeds for cardiovascular research and local public education campaigns.

Tickets for the black tie event are $250 per person; $2,500 for a table of 10.

The event includes an auction of more than 100 high-appeal items such as jewelry, artwork and travel packages.

Organist to perform

free public recital

Renowned organist Kenneth Udy will perform a free public recital 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at the LDS Chapel at 3400 West Charleston Blvd.

Udy has more than 25 years of experience and is often guest organist at the Salt Lake Tabernacle and with the Utah Symphony.

The public is invited.

Poem and art

entries needed

To celebrate Black History Month, Kids Creative Classics is sponsoring a poem and art contest for children ages 5 to 10.

Bunny Hull, Grammy-award winning songwriter and Las Vegas native, will perform and record the winning poem. The winner will receive 50 copies of the finished product. The winning artwork will be featured as the CD's cover art.

Art awareness

luncheon set

Nevada Arts Advocates has scheduled its Arts Awareness Luncheon at the Stardust Conference Center at noon on Feb. 10. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Speaker Dale Erquiaga will present a speech titled "The Las Vegas Centennial Celebration -- What is planned and how you can help."

YOUTH

County seeking

camp counselors

Clark County Parks & Community Services is recruiting summer camp counselors for Camp Lee Canyon at Mount Charleston. Counselors will work with boys and girls ages 8 -15 during three 6-day resident camps in July.

Each camp will have a special focus and will be geared toward a specific age group. Campers also will participate in traditional camp activities such as hiking, campfires, skits and games. Camp Lee Canyon is located 45 miles from Las Vegas.

Counselors must be at least 18. Experience working with children is preferred. Call 455-7560 for more information or an application.

Funds raised for

stem cell research

Las Vegas Friends, a nonprofit association, is making a dent in stem cell research. The organization raised $70,000 for the Reeve-Irvine Research Center and $14,000 for the Nevada Community Enrichment Program during its "A New Beginning" Gala held on New Year's Eve.

The gala took place at La Chateaux, 6985 W. Sahara Ave., with John Daly serving as master of ceremonies and a message from Christopher Reeve via video.

"The event was a true success and raised a lot of funds for this good cause," said Sylvia Cortez, president. "We hope to create a tradition that will bring a special message to our community on an annual basis."
