COMPETITIONS

Senior artists wanted for contest

Senior artists, age 50 and older, are encouraged to submit original works for Celebrating Life!, the fine arts competition sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Arts Commission and the Department of Leisure Services Senior Citizens Programs Division.

The last days for submission are July 22 and July 24 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 South Brush St. No entry fee is required. Seniors can submit two or three-dimensional artworks, completed within the past three years and not used in a former contest.

One work per artist can be submitted, and works are eligible if they meet size criteria. Entry forms and submission criteria are available for pick up at all City of Las Vegas cultural and senior centers, or the Arts Commission's office, 749 Veterans Memorial Drive. Judges will select the award winners and artwork that will be displayed in the final exhibition. Cash awards will be given in several categories.

A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. July 31 at Charleston Heights. Artwork will be on display through Oct. 1. Those interested can call 229-6383 or 229-4631 to request a form.

EDUCATION

Exchange students need host families

The Educational Merit Foundation high school exchange program is seeking volunteer families to host pre-screened high school students for five to ten months while they attend local high schools.

Students are slated to arrive in August and will come with insurance and spending money. Host families must provide food, a bed and a willingness to share American culture. Families without children and single parents also may apply.

Graff, Greenfield set to perform

At 2 p.m. today "Airy" Larry Graff and "Dirt" Doug Greenfield, members of the Banana Slug String Band, are scheduled to entertain children while instilling important messages about science and the environment with a production at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 South Brush St. The same production also will take place at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Boulevard North.

MUSIC

Arts Society seeks singers

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society invites interested singers to audition for its 42nd season in the Society's Musical Arts Chorus, which performs choral masterworks with professional orchestra and the Musical Arts Singers, a small semi-professional vocal chamber ensemble.

Rehearsals take place from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evenings at the UNLV Alta Ham Fine Arts Building, Room 147.

RECREATION

'Snow White' to be shown

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" will kick off this year's Family Film Series, sponsored by the Division of Leisure Services, at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Participants are encouraged to bring a picnic, take blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy the family classic.

The Family Film Series is held on Thursdays at Jaycee Park, at St. Louis and South Eastern avenues. Admission is free. Those interested can call 229-1087.
