Spring Valley Hospital celebrated its 500th baby in 2004 when Alexa Marie Selva was delivered on June 28.
Parents Chris and Kim Selva didn't know the arrival of their 6-pound, 8-ounce baby was monumental to anyone but their families. The 500th baby was supposed to be one scheduled to be delivered by Cesarean section, but Alexa arrived two weeks early to take the distinction.
"We didn't know who it was going to be," said Naomi Linardo, spokeswoman for the hospital.
The Selvas, Henderson residents, chose the hospital because all the doctor and insurance purposes were aligned, but Kim Selva said this time was more relaxing than the delivery of her now 2-year-old daughter, Madisyn.
On the last night in the hospital, Chris and Kim Selva had dinner in the hospital room before returning home to months of sleepless nights.
"You have more help here," Kim Selva said of the level II nursery at the hospital. The nursery is commonly used for premature babies born with medical problems. Alexa received a clean bill of health. "There's a nurse in the nursery at night, so you can sleep at night. At the other hospitals, (the baby is) with you all night. You have a little bit of a break."
Spring Valley Hospital, 5400 S. Rainbow Blvd., opened in October. In 2003, there were more than 100 babies delivered at the hospital.
