FOOTBALL

Las Vegas High's Lomax honored

The Las Vegas Gladiators and KTNV-TV Channel 3's Operation: Football awarded Las Vegas High School running back Jamal Lomax the Ironman Award for the eighth week of the high school football season.

The junior, who sports a 3.6 grade point average, led the Wildcats to a 49-14 win over Rancho on Oct. 16 and rushed for 106 yards on 10 carries. He also scored a touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Lomax had 11 tackles and returned a fumble 61 yards for a Las Vegas touchdown in the victory.

The Gladiators and the U.S. Army will honor Lomax by donating $250 to the Las Vegas High School athletic department.

Gorman player picked for bowl game

Bishop Gorman linebacker Ryan Reynolds was picked by the U.S. Army national selection tour to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 15 in San Antonio. The game will feature 78 of the top high school football players in the nation.

Reynolds also was one of five players named as a finalist for the Myoplex Speed & Strength Athlete of the Year Award. The Gaels senior underwent agility testing on Oct. 22 and his results were to be compared with the other four finalists.

The winner of the tests receives the Walter Payton Trophy.

TENNIS

Association starts all-level classes

The Nevada Tennis Association has started conducting classes for juniors and adults this month at various locations across the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The classes are for entry-level to intermediate players ages 5 through adult. The class fee is $45 per person for the six-week session.

Classes focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.

Classes will be held at the following parks on the days listed: All American Park, Tuesdays; Angel Park, Mondays; Black Mountain Recreation Center, Tuesdays; Bruce Trent Park, Thursdays; Bunker Park, Saturdays; Duck Creek Park, Mondays; Morrell Park, Tuesdays; Mountain Ridge Park, Saturdays; Paul Meyer Park, Thursdays; Thurman White Middle School, Saturdays.

AQUATICS

Synchronized swim show open to all

The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites everyone to come and enjoy the Holiday Synchronized Swimming Show from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Municipal Pool. The Las Vegas Aquastars synchronized swimming team of about 15 children will perform.

Admission is free to the family event. Spectators are welcome to use the available seating at the pool or can bring their own chairs. The Municipal Pool is located at 431 E. Bonanza Road.

The Southern Nevada Mermaids are seeking new members for their synchronized swim club.

Team Rebel seeking new members

Team Rebel Aquatics is a year-round competitive swimming team seeking new members between the ages of 5 and 18. The minimum requirement for a tryout is to be able to swim 25 yards in the pool using any stroke.

Tryouts are from 5-7 p.m. Mondays except holidays. Birth certificate and a $50 registration fee are required at time of registration.

Clinic to be held Nov. 20

BASKETBALL

Henderson program registering youth

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will accept mail-in registration for its seasonal youth basketball program through Nov. 13.

Drop-off registrations will be accepted Nov. 15-18. Walk-in registrations will be accepted, pending space availability, on player rating days: Nov. 20, 22 and 23. Mail-in registration will be given priority over all other methods of registration.

Registration cost is $35 per child in grades K-10; $30 per child if two siblings are registered; and $25 per child if three or more siblings are registered. Practices begin the week of Dec. 6 and the season runs from Jan. 8-Feb. 19.

Las Vegas Vipers seek post players

The Las Vegas Vipers are conducting tryouts for post players for their 12-year-old girls basketball team. The Vipers are a traveling basketball team based out of Green Valley.

CHAMPS registers for fall league

Women's league recruits players

Senior Women's Softball continually recruits players for year-round play in the 40-, 50-, 55- and 60-year-old age groups.

Local league organizing teams

The Las Vegas Lacrosse League is now organizing boys and girls high school and middle school level teams.

The league needs volunteer coaches and assistant coaches as well as parents to help organize new teams or to man existing teams. There also will be clinics in the fall.

Fund-raising tourney set for Anthem

The Henderson Community Foundation will hold its inaugural golf tournament fund-raiser on Monday at Anthem Country Club, 1 Club Side Drive in Henderson.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $650 per team and $175 per individual player. The price includes lunch, an awards ceremony and gifts.

Saving Strokes to help survivors

A golf fitness and training program for stroke survivors is slated for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 12 at Las Vegas Golf Club, 4300 West Washington Ave.

The free clinic, called Saving Strokes, includes golf-ready assessments and hands-on golf training for stroke survivors in all stages of recovery. There also will be health screenings, physical therapy assessments, instruction and adaptive equipment demonstrations from 9 a.m.-noon. Lunch will be served.

Tournament to benefit tuition program

Bishop Gorman High School will host its annual Gorman Golf Classic to benefit its tuition assistance program at Bear's Lake Best Las Vegas on Thursday.

Festivities will include two hole-in-one contests, one courtesy of Las Vegas Harley-Davidson and one courtesy of Centennial Toyota. Lucky golfers could end up driving away on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle or a 2005 Toyota 4-Runner.

Arrival and registration begin with coffee and bagels at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start following at 10 a.m. Reservation is $375 per golfer and includes an 18-hole round, golf cart, practice balls, team buy-ins, mulligans, buy-in for hole prizes, beer and water on the course, and a post-tournament gourmet luncheon and awards presentation.

It offers sports training and competitions throughout Southern Nevada and says it is appropriate for novices as well as elite athletes.

Outlaws offering beginner classes

The Las Vegas Outlaws will offer Beginner Hockey Classes for skaters ages 4-12 at the Las Vegas Ice Center, 9295 W. Flamingo Road. Class times are 5:10 to 5:55 p.m. Wednesdays.

The next session starts today and runs through Dec. 15. The cost for the seven-week session is $70.
