HONORS
Sierra Vista player gets Ironman Award
The Las Vegas Gladiators, in partnership with the News 3's "Operation: Football" and the U.S. Army, awarded Jake Whittaker of Sierra Vista High School the Gladiators' Ironman Award for the ninth week of the season.
The Gladiators and the Army will honor Whittaker by making a $250 donation to the Sierra Vista High School athletic department.
Whittaker, a junior quarterback, led the Mountain Lions to a 28-0 win over Durango High School on Oct. 22, throwing for 169 yards and one touchdown. Whittaker, who sports a 3.5 grade point average, also rushed for 39 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
VOLLEYBALL
Nevada Juniors to hold tryouts
Tryouts for the Nevada Juniors Club Volleyball team will be held starting Nov. 17. Tryouts for two teams, girls 15-and-under and 14-and-under will be held at Durango High School, 7100 W. Dewey Drive, from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 17 and from 7 to 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 18.
A parent/player meeting will be held Nov. 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost for the tryout is $20 and includes a Nevada Juniors T-shirt.

BASKETBALL
Team registration accepted for league
Team registration is currently being accepted for the NJB (National Junior Basketball) ALL-NET basketball league which has separate divisions for boys and girls in grades five through eight as well as a junior division. Games will played at the Meadows YMCA on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays beginning Nov. 17.
Registration fee is $600 per team and includes referee fees. To register, call Gene at 645-8071.
Sign-ups accepted for high school division
Registration is currently being accepted for Boys NJB High School Division basketball. Games will begin Dec. 4 and will be played at the Leisure Center next to Palo Verde High School in Summerlin. games will be played on Saturday afternoons only.

GOLF
Players invited to city tournament
Adult golfers of all abilities are invited to participate in the City of Las Vegas Golf Tournament on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. at the Las Vegas Golf Club, 4300 W. Washington Ave.
Sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation Division in cooperation with the Las Vegas Golf Club, the event will offer a four-person scramble format. First-, second- and third-place winners will receive awards.
The $65 per person fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart rental, range card and an awards banquet with a barbecue cookout.

Participants should register no later than Dec. 10. Please advise the tournament manager if a single-rider golf cart is needed.
Saving Strokes to help survivors
A golf fitness and training program for stroke survivors is slated for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday at Las Vegas Golf Club, 4300 West Washington Ave.
The free clinic, called Saving Strokes, includes golf-ready assessments and hands-on golf training for stroke survivors in all stages of recovery. There also will be health screenings, physical therapy assessments, instruction and adaptive equipment demonstrations from 9 a.m.-noon. Lunch will be served.

SOFTBALL
UNLV winter camp to instruct players
UNLV is introducing a 2004 Winter Advance Softball Camp. The camp instructors will include Division I, II and junior college coaches as well as well as current college athletes and professional academy instructors.
The camp will include three days of intensive skill instruction geared toward the serious softball player. Each day the camp will offer skills development in the morning and the campers will play in mini-tournament games in the evening.
Only 60 spots are available for the camp which is open for ninth- through 12th- graders.
Cost for the camp is $300 before Dec. 15 and $315 afterward. The dates for the camp are Dec. 20 (2 to 9:30 p.m.), Dec. 21 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Dec. 22 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Women's team in need of players
Senior Women's Softball continually recruits players for year-round play in the 40-, 50-, 55- and 60-year-old age groups. Depending on experience and skill level, there is both competitive tournament and recreational play in the league. The various teams practice and play at different times and places. Coaches Clinic II set for Dec. 20-21
UNLV Softball's Coaches Clinic II will be held Dec. 20 and 21 at Eller Media Stadium at the corner of Harmon and Swenson. The clinic will have two days of topics that will focus on the aspects of fundamentals and troubleshooting flaws in softball players.
The clinic will focus on three separate groups of skills per evening. The clinics will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Cost for the two-day clinic is $60 before Dec. 15 and $65 afterward. Arrive 30 minutes prior to registration.

TENNIS
Association holding all-level classes
The Nevada Tennis Association has started conducting classes for juniors and adults this month at various locations across the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The classes are for entry-level to intermediate players ages 5 through adult. The class fee is $45 per person for the six-week session.
Classes focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.
Classes will be held at the following parks on the days listed: All American Park (Tuesdays), Angel Park (Mondays), Black Mountain Recreation Center (Tuesdays), Bruce Trent Park (Thursdays), Bunker Park (Saturdays), Duck Creek Park (Mondays), Morrell Park (Tuesdays), Mountain Ridge Park (Saturdays), Paul Meyer Park (Thursdays), White Middle School (Saturdays).

AQUATICS
Synchronized swim show open to all
The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites everyone to come and enjoy the Holiday Synchronized Swimming Show on Dec. 3 at the Municipal Pool.
The Las Vegas Aquastars synchronized swimming team of approximately 15 children will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Admission to the event is free. Spectators are welcome to use the available seating at the pool or can bring their own portable chairs.
The Municipal Pool is located at 431 E. Bonanza Road.

Team Rebel seeks new members
Team Rebel Aquatics is a year-round competitive swimming team seeking new members between the ages of 5 and 18. The minimum requirement for a tryout is to be able to swim 25 yards in the pool using any stroke.
Tryouts are from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays except holidays. A birth certificate and a $50 registration fee are required for registration. Practices are held at the Buchanan Natatorium on the UNLV campus. For more information, call 385-7946.

Outlaws help teach beginning players
The Las Vegas Outlaws will offer beginner hockey classes for skaters ages 4-12 at the Las Vegas Ice Center, 9295 W. Flamingo Road.
Class times are 5:10 to 5:55 p.m. Wednesdays. The current session runs through Dec. 15. The cost for the seven-week session is $70.

Local league looking for school teams
Las Vegas Lacrosse League is organizing boys and girls high school and middle school level teams.

Youth league sets Saturday sign-ups
Registration for Nevada Youth Football League is ongoing from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays at the league office, 1651 S. Buffalo Drive, between Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard.
Participants should bring an original copy of a birth certificate, a utility bill and a parent's drivers license. Registration fees for players ages 6 to 14 are $160 and for cheerleaders, $75. Players need to be present for weigh-ins. Early registration is encouraged.
