CHEERLEADING

Go For It USA holding tryouts

Go For It USA, 3105 Coleman in North Las Vegas, will hold tryouts for its Cheer Stars competitive cheerleading program at 2:30 p.m. on April 30. Team fees will be explained at the event but there is no cost for the tryout or fun gym preceding the tryout.

The Cheer Stars compete in local, regional and national competitions as well as many exhibitions locally. They also attend a summer camp.

GOLF

Ninth annual Golf Fun Day teeing off

The Nevada chapter of the Community Associations Institute will hold its ninth annual Golf Fun Day on April 29 at Angel Park Golf Club, 100 S. Rampart Blvd. The cost is $750 per foursome and all proceeds will benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

BASEBALL

Traveling team holding tryouts

The Las Vegas Hawks Baseball Club has openings for baseball players who are 9 and under as of Aug. 1, 2004.

The Hawks are a competitive club team that competes in tournaments locally and in some surrounding states. The team focuses on building individual skills and team unity with a positive atmosphere and has a large coaching staff, which includes pitching and batting coaches.

Locals flourish at The Strip at LVMS

Class winners from the opening week of the 2005 Jerry's Nugget Championship Drag Racing series are: Super Pro, Mark Piel of Boulder City; Pro, Ty Ishibashi of Las Vegas; Street, Stephanie Wong of Las Vegas; Motorcycle, Lonnie Woodruff of Bountiful, Utah; and Sport Compact, Bill Dudley of Las Vegas.

TRACK

Neon Invitational meet set for May

The Las Vegas Neon Invitational youth outdoor track meet will be held on May 7 and 8 at Canyon Springs High School, 350 E. Alexander Road in North Las Vegas. The event, co-hosted by the Nevada Association of the United States of America Track & Field (USATF) and the City of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, is expected to be sanctioned by the USATF.

Individuals and teams ages 5 to 18 may enter track events, high jump, mini-javelin, long jump, shot put, discus, triple jump and pole vault events. Track events will include the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, 1,500-meter, 3,000-meter, 4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay, 4x800-meter relay, 80-meter hurdles, 100-meter hurdles, 110-meter hurdles, 200-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Wheelchair events will include shot put, javelin and 60-, 100- and 200-meter races. Participants in wheelchair events must be members of USATF or Wheelchair Sports USA.

Events will begin at 9 a.m. each day. Entry fees are $3 per event and $12 per relay if received by April 30. After April 30, fees will be $5 per event and $20 per relay. Fees, payable by money order, certified check or team check, must accompany entry forms. Late entries on meet day will be accepted between 7 and 9:30 a.m. only at the event site.

BASKETBALL

Champs Youths offering sign-ups

Champs Youth Basketball is taking registration for its upcoming youth basketball league for ages 8-18.

Champs offers a recreational league (Game Time) and a competitive league (Prime Time) for all age groups on both sides of town. Participants can sign up with a team, as individuals or with friends. Practice times and games are scheduled at local high schools.

All games are announced and include trivia contests and halftime shootouts. There also will be a postseason tournament for all teams.

Big Time Tournament registration under way

Advance team registrations are under way online for Sonny Vaccaro's 11th annual Reebok Big Time Tournament, a boys prep basketball event in Las Vegas.

This year's Championship of the Summer is set for July 22-26 and will feature 336 teams from across the nation and overseas. Registrations are being accepted and processed on a first-come, first-served basis at www.reebokbigtime.com.

FENCING

Fencing Academy announces finalists

The Fencing Academy of Nevada announced its finalists at the Senior Nevada State Fencing Championships held earlier this month: Dale Hargis, second place, Men's Epee; Mark Clayton, fifth place, Men's Epee; Ashok Pathi, fourth place, Men's Sabre; Cynthia Amelia, second place, Women's Epee; Lisa Clayton, third place, Women's Epee; Nathalie Keft, fourth place, Women's Epee; and Nik-Nik Ameli, third place, Women's Foil.

The Fencing Academy of Nevada women fencers swept team events holding first place in all three categories -- Women's Epee Team, Women's Foil team and Women's Sabre team.

FOOTBALL

Xtreme Bowl IV set for April 30 and May 1

Adult wheelchair football teams from all over the United States and Canada are set to converge April 30 and May 1 for competition in the Xtreme Bowl IV tournament at the City of Las Vegas Wheelchair Sports Park inside Freedom Park.

Teams will compete in a round-robin format on the first day, followed by a single-elimination tournament on the second day. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. There is no charge for spectators.

Tournament entry fees are $250 per team of up to 12 people or $30 for an individual. Football games are slated to begin at 9 a.m. April 30 and May 1. The event is sponsored by the Nevada Paralyzed Veterans Association and the Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services Adaptive Recreation Division. SOFTBALL

Women's league recruiting players

Senior Women's Softball continually recruits players for year-round play in the 40-, 50-, 55- and 60-year-old divisions.

Depending on experience and skill level, there is competitive tournament and recreational play. The teams practice and play at different times and places.

HOCKEY

New senior players sought for pick-up play

Seniors ages 50 and over are invited to play nonchecking pick-up hockey at the Fiesta Ice Arena from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. every Wednesday. Players will not be committed to a league.
