ART

Coronado club plans elementary contest

Coronado High School's Key Club, a service organization and an affiliate of Kiwanis International, is sponsoring its first Key Club Art Contest for elementary school children.

The theme for this contest is How I Can Help My Community. Prizes will be offered in two categories, kindergarten through third grade and fourth grade through fifth grade, to first-, second- and third-place winners. $200 will be donated to the schools of the first-place winners in support of their art programs.

Galloway ES to host multicultural festival

Galloway Elementary School, located at 701 Skyline Road, will host its annual Multicultural/Academic Festival from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday. The festivities will showcase the work of Galloway students as they have explored the world through dance, music, art, social studies, geography and activities in their classrooms. Students will perform and present a mural during the event.

Gaming writer to sign his new book

Frank Scoblete, author of "The Craps Underground" and one of the best-selling gaming authors in the country, will be signing and discussing his book at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Borders, 1445 W. Sunset Road.

Scoblete is also a monthly columnist for Casino Player magazine. "The Craps Underground" is the inside story of how dice controllers are winning millions from casinos.

All Abilities Expo set for Pavilion

The Henderson Pavilion will host the All Abilities Expo from 4 until 7 p.m. Saturday. The event is designed to provide resources and education to individuals of all abilities, their families, caregivers, health care and educational professionals and others interested in improving the capacity for living in Southern Nevada.

Admission to the vendor fair is free. Hearing-impaired comedienne Kathy Buckley will perform at the Pavilion after the event, at 7 p.m. Tickets for her performance range from $3 to $12.

Youth groups to meet around valley

The ninth annual youth rally, in honor of the National Day of Prayer, is set for noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Park, Area D. There will be free food and an auction.

Medical centers plan health, safety fair

Rainbow Medical Centers is scheduled to host its sixth annual Cinco de Mayo Health and Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 1 at Rainbow Medical Centers' Boulder Highway office at 4241 S. Nellis Blvd. There will be free blood pressure and bone density screenings for adults, and brochures, pamphlets and newsletters about healthier lifestyles will be distributed.

In addition, there will be a carnival atmosphere for children, with free games, prizes and treats.

PERFORMANCE

Church choir set to perform cantata

The cantata "How Great Thou Art" by David Clydesdale will be presented by the Green Valley Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and Orchestra, under the direction of Robert Kuzminski, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, 1798 Wigwam Parkway. Open to the public, the concert has no admission fee but a free-will offering will be accepted.
