CYCLING

Starbucks holding fund-raiser April 30

Starbucks, located at the corner of Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, is holding Karaoke For A Cause from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday to help support Las Vegas cyclists who will be participating in the 2005 AIDS/LifeCycle Ride. There will be a partner contest for the best karaoke performance.

Participants in the karaoke contest will make a $5 donation and receive a complimentary beverage and an AIDS/LifeCycle orange wristband.

FENCING

Local academy fencers shine

Several members of The Fencing Academy of Nevada performed at the Junior Pacific Coast Championships in San Jose April 9-10. Kian Ameli, 13, won 8th place in the Under 20 Men's Epee and placed 12th in Cadet Under 16 Men's Epee; Jacob Peck, 16, placed 41/54 in the Cadet Under 16 Men's Foil; and Naryan Paithi, 14, placed 18th in Cadet Under 16 Men's Epee.

In the United States Fencing Association Super Regional Youth Circuit, Ameli won the 1st place gold medal in Youth Men's Epee; Nik-Nik Ameli, 11, won the 1st place gold medal in Youth 12 Women's Epee and the 5th place medal in the Youth 12 Women's Foil; Emily Clayton, 10, won the 5th place medal in Youth 10 Women's Epee; and Claudia Peck, 10, placed 15th in Youth 10 Women's Foil.

All these fencers train under the direction of master Yves Auriol at the Fencing Academy of Nevada.

FITNESS

Extreme kettlebell classes to be held

Mike Springer, Certified Personal Trainer, will be instructing workout classes using kettlebells. This high-energy class will challenge your cardiovascular system, your strength and your flexibility.

CHEERLEADING

Go For It USA to hold tryouts

Go For It USA, 3105 Coleman in North Las Vegas, will hold tryouts for its Cheer Stars competitive cheerleading program at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday . Team fees will be explained at the event but there is no cost for the tryout or fun gym preceding the tryout.

DANCE

Dance auditions, clinic to be held

Boyack's Dance Attack is holding dance auditions and a clinic from Monday through May 6 for ages 4-18. Dance Attack accepts students ages 4-18 and performs locally as well as at UNLV halftimes, at malls, schools, charity and other major events throughout the community.

Dance Attack also has competition teams that have won many local and regional awards.

Boyack's has all levels of dance classes from beginning to advanced that instruct in jazz, ballet, tap, hip-hop, cheerleading and tumbling. The studio also has a tots program for ages 2 1/2 to 4 years of age and features two locations.

CHARITY

Sears gives $25K in merchandise to ASAS

Sears, Roebuck and Co. provided a truckload of new merchandise, with a retail value of $25,000, to the Las Vegas All-Stars on April 11. Sears reached out to the organization as part of the NBC-TV "Today" show's Lend a Hand program with Al Roker.

"Today" is partnering with Sears and other companies to help organizations nationwide enhance their services to the community in cities like Las Vegas. Sears donated a total of $125,000 to community organizations in five cities throughout the week of April 11-15.

GOLF

Alzheimer's tourney coming to Aliante

The first annual Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on June 4 at the Sun City Aliante Golf Course. All proceeds from the tourney will go directly to the Alzheimer's Association.

The cost is $75. The tourney will begin at 8 a.m. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m.

A raffle also will be held with tickets costing $5 for one, $10 for three or $20 for eight.

Elks to hold charity tourney

The Las Vegas Elks Charity Golf Tournament will be held May 16 at Silverstone Golf Club. All proceeds will benefit the Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf.

The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. The cost is $100 per player.

There will be two hole in one prizes sponsored by Desert Buick and a trip to the 2006 Masters will be awarded.

Ninth annual Golf Fun Day to tee off

The Nevada Chapter of the Community Associations Institute will hold its ninth annual Golf Fun Day on Friday at Angel Park Golf Club, 100 S. Rampart Blvd. The cost is $750 per foursome and all proceeds will benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

TRACK

Neon Invitational meet set for May

The Las Vegas Neon Invitational youth outdoor track meet will be held on May 7 and 8 at Canyon Springs High School, 350 E. Alexander Road in North Las Vegas. The event, co-hosted by the Nevada Association of the United States of America Track & Field (USATF) and the City of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, is expected to be sanctioned by the USATF.

Individuals and teams ages 5 to 18 may enter track and field events, Participants in wheelchair events must be members of USATF or Wheelchair Sports USA.

Events will begin at 9 a.m. each day. Entry fees are $3 per event and $12 per relay if received by Saturday. After Saturday, fees will be $5 per event and $20 per relay. Fees, payable by money order, certified check or team check, must accompany entry forms. Late entries on meet day will be accepted between 7 and 9:30 a.m. only at the event site.

BASKETBALL

Champs Youths offering sign-ups

Champs Youth Basketball is taking registration for its upcoming youth basketball league for ages 8-18.

Champs offers a recreational league (Game Time) and a competitive league (Prime Time) for all age groups on both sides of town. Participants can sign up with a team, as individuals or with friends. Practice times and games are scheduled at local high schools. All games include trivia contests and halftime shootouts.
