Students entering sixth grade and their parents are invited to attend a free program on surviving middle school. Participants will receive tips on how to feel more comfortable in a new environment and how to prepare for the year ahead. Students will get answers to their questions, learn about library resources and practice opening combination locks.
Programs will be held today at West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.; 2 p.m. Saturday at Enterprise Library, 25 E. Shelbourne Ave.; 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd.; and 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave., and Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd.

Foreign exchange students need homes
AFS is currently seeking members of the Las Vegas community to open their homes to a foreign exchange student for the 2005-06 school year. Students will be arriving from Europe in August and will attend high school during their stay.

St. Rose launches Spanish Web site
In an effort to serve the growing Hispanic population in the Las Vegas Valley, St. Rose Dominican Hospitals has launched a Spanish language version of its Web site. The site includes information on all St. Rose medical services, educational classes and support groups. Upcoming events, maps and virtual tours are also available.

Storyteller to share tales with children
Storyteller Victoria Burnett will perform at 11 a.m. today at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road. The show is part of the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department's Morning Children's Series. Burnett's stories are infused with music and convey positive messages through the power of the spoken word.

Program registration opens tomorrow
The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is accepting Safekey and Teen Scene registration for the 2005-06 school year starting Thursday. For times and locations, call 267-4100.
Safekey is a before- and after-school recreational enrichment program offered at all Henderson public elementary schools. The program features crafts, games, cooking, special activities, homework assistance and a nutritional snack as an alternative for children while their parents are at work. It is offered to children ages 5-12.
Teen Scene is a recreational enrichment program offered to students ages 13-15 during the nine-month school year at all Henderson public middle and junior high schools. The program offers teens the opportunity to custom tailor recreational and enrichment activities based on their individual interests.
Climbing workshops set for Saturdays
The Downtown Recreation Center, 105 W. Basic Road, is hosting a series of workshops designed to introduce the basics of indoor rock climbing to youth.
Workshops will be offered on Saturdays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. and cost $7 per session. The schedule continues on Saturday and Aug. 27.
