'Wind in the Willows' to be presented

Stage Door Youth Players announce Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willows" 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. opening Saturday with additional performances Sept. 10, 17 at Summerlin Library Performing Arts Center, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.

The play tells the tale of the river bank and the four characters -- Toad, Mole, Ratty, and Badger -- who live along it.

Sondheim's 'Assassins' runs through Sept. 18

Stage Door Entertainment plans to present Stephen Sondheim's provocative and controversial musical, 'Assassins' from Friday through Sept. 18 at the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.

Beginning Friday performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sept. 18.

Spinning fact, fiction and social commentary, songwriter Sondheim and collaborator John Weidman interweave the biographies of 13 infamous figures, as they each plot to enact the most public of crimes, assassination of the president of the United States.

The show is for mature audiences only, due to explicit language and adult themes.

Mayor's mother to be honored at museum

The Las Vegas Art Museum (LVAM), 9600 W. Sahara Ave., plans to honor late artist Laura B. Goodman with a retrospective exhibition and gala museum fundraiser on Sept. 9.

Goodman was a lifetime advocate of the arts, a docent volunteer and supporter of the museum during her residency in Las Vegas. The gala evening will include a performance by the Las Vegas Opera and the Las Vegas Chamber Society, a video tribute presentation of Goodman's life, cocktails and delicacies provided by renowned area restaurants and chefs.

A private VIP reception with the artist's son, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, and his family will be held from 6-7 p.m., followed by the gala reception from 7-9 p.m.

Ballet Under the Stars is set for Sept. 10

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services and the Nevada Ballet Theatre announce Ballet Under the Stars, scheduled for 8 p.m. Sept. 10 at Hills Park, 9000 Hillpointe Road.

Inspired by the king of ragtime, "Joplin!" and the addition of one-act ballets mark this production as a departure from the traditional. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Aladdin Theatre to host Mariachi Festival

The Las Vegas International Mariachi Festival is set to take over the Aladdin Theatre for Performing Art's stage beginning at 8 p.m. Sept. 17.

Featuring Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitl?n, Mariachi Sol de Mexico De Jos Hern?ndez, and Mariachi Estrella de Jalisco, the festival will celebrate Fiestas Patrias (Mexico's Independence) with a three and a half hour musical event. In addition, Ballet Folkl?rico San Juan, with special guests Christian Castro and Aida Cuevas, will be performing the Mariachi.

Event to honor retiring conductor

The Las Vegas Philharmonic Guild invites friends in the community to enjoy Dinner & Dancing Under the Stars, a salute to Harold Leighton Weller, founder and music director of The Las Vegas Philharmonic.

Weller plans to retire at the end of the 2006/2007 season.

The event is slated for 6 -10 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Hard Rock Hotel's north pool, 4455 Paradise Road.

Artists can compete for Roundup prizes

The Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., is calling for entries for the 54th annual Regional Fall Art Roundup juried competition, with entries due by Sept. 24.

Categories include: photography (digital or film); pencil/pen/pastel drawing; oil/acrylic painting; mixed media/other; sculpture (bronze, stone, wood, clay, glass, fiberglass or resin); and watercolor.

An opening reception featuring the participating artists is planned from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 9,. A judge will award $1,000 to the Einstein Bros. Bagels Best of Show artist, and will present additional cash prizes and ribbons for the top three places in each category during the reception. The museum, located at 9600 W. Sahara Avenue, will display the accepted entries through Dec. 31.

Entry fees are $15 for museum members or $20 for non-members.

Moonlight Concerts run through October

Now in its 10th year, Clark County's Annual Moonlight Concert Series, an eclectic mix of pop, roots-rock, world music and contemporary folk is set to take place at the Clark County Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, now through October 1. All concerts start at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Upcoming concerts include: on Sept. 10, Los Lobos; on Oct. 1, Blessid Union of Souls with Ponder.

No outside food or beverages may be carried in except for one sealed water bottle. Food and drink will be available on site for purchase.

Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome.

No pets allowed.

Admission is $8 in advance; $12 at the gate; and children under 12 are admitted free.

Kohl's made $57,074 gift to kids' charity

Kohl's Department Stores (kohls.com) announces a gift of $57,074 to Sunrise Children's Foundation to support the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), and Parents as Teachers (PAT) programs. HIPPY and PAT are early-intervention research-based programs designed to increase parental involvement in a child's education.

Over the last 10 years, more than 3,000 families have benefited from the lessons provided by HIPPY and PAT.

Salvation Army to collect school supplies

The Salvation Army needs back to school supplies and is asking the community to help.

Family Household Bank is sponsoring the drive and its facility will serve as the collection point for the northwest part of the city. Barrels will be placed in its lobby to collect donations. The facility is located at 1111 Town Center Drive, just off the Summerlin Parkway. Other businesses helping in the drive include the Rio, Riviera, Clark County Conservation and Sienna.

Items also may be dropped off at the Salvation Army Administration headquarters, 2900 Palomino Lane.

Sharpen chess skills at workshop

Johnson Community School, 340 Villa Monterey, plans a chess workshop noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 10. The workshop is intended for those ages 6-14.

A Search for Bobby Fischer chess tournament also is planned at Johnson for that age group 9 a.m. 5 p.m. on Sept. 17. Fee is $20 and includes lunch.

Tax prep course offered over 10 weeks

Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St., is accepting enrollment in various classes through Sept. 8 for classes beginning Sept. 13. Ballet academy classes offered in Summerlin

The Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre is now signing up students for the 120 dance classes it offers.

Classes include ballet for all levels, modern dance, hip-hop and jazz. The world renowned faculty charges $45 per month per class with discounts available for multiple classes. Fall class participants will have an opportunity to audition for a Las Vegas community tradition, The Nutcracker.

Red Rock to host Joshua Jubilee

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area announces the Joshua Jubilee from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 3. At the Visitors Center.

Plans call for Native American dancing, live storytelling, kids' crafts, flute demonstrations, interpretive talks, educational displays and information.

The working dogs of Clark County Fire and Rescue will be on hand as will the BLM firemen and characters like Mojave Max and Smokey the Bear.

More than 35 artists, naturalists and community groups will be represented. For the artistically minded, there will be Native American jewelry, astronomy and photographic displays and book signings.

The Joshua Jubilee will celebrate the end of summer.

'Winnie the Pooh' to visit Orleans Arena

Making its Las Vegas premiere on Sept. 14 18 at the Orleans Arena, "Disney Live! Winnie the Pooh" brings the Hundred Acre Wood to the stage in an interactive production.

Shows run Sept. 14 through 18. Tickets start at $20 and go up to $55; they are available through the Arena Box Office at 284-7777.

Restaurant to host Oktoberfest events

Hofbr?uhaus Las Vegas, 4510 Paradise Road, plans to kick off the annual Oktoberfest celebration with a 7 p.m. keg tapping of the traditional Hofbr?u Oktoberfest beer on Sept. 17. The keg tapping celebration includes a special guest who will serve as the mayor (or B?rgermeister) and a parade through the restaurant.

The October 1810 marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen marked the first celebration of what would later be named the Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest celebrations have been cancelled just 24 times, mostly due to wars. In 1854 and 1873, the events were cancelled because of a cholera epidemic.

NDOT rep to talk about 95 widening project

A Nevada Department of Transportation representative plans to make an updated presentation on the project to widen U.S. Highway 95 on Sept. 20, at 1:30 p.m. at the Howard Lieburn Senior Center, 6230 Garwood Ave., near the intersection of U.S. 95 and Jones Boulevard.

The event is free and open to the public and will include a video presentation, an overview of the project, details on what has already been done and what can be expected in the future.

Controversial tell-all author Brent Jordan plans an appearance at Waldenbooks in the Fashion Show mall, 3200 Las Vegas, Blvd., from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday to sign copies of his book "Stripped: Twenty Years of Secrets From Inside the Strip Club."

Jordan was a long-time bouncer at Cheetah's.

George Dennis was elected as commander of the Elmer T. Bullock Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8250 in Summerlin at their last meeting.
