Sierra Vista (41-14) defeated Hawaii, 6-1, on Aug. 16 at Community College of Southern Nevada's Lied Field to capture the American Legion Senior Western Regional and advance to the American Legion World Series in Rapid City, S.D., which started Aug. 19. Pitcher Drew Leary threw a complete game to lead the Lions past Hawaii (21-5).
Sierra Vista also won the Class 4A state championship in May by defeating Centennial when Leary threw a five-hit shutout to top the Bulldogs.
GV loses at Junior Legion tourney
Green Valley's AA Junior Gators Post 40 were eliminated from the Mid-States Regional Junior American Legion Tournament on July 30 after being shut out by the state of Kansas' representative in the tournament, the Salina Pestinger Hawks, 6-0. Green Valley also lost in their tournament opener on July 29 by Louisiana's state representative in the tournament, the Shreveport Athletics, 7-1.
Green Valley, coached by David Mattingly, went a perfect 18-0-1 through the regular season to qualify for the eight-team tournament which was held in Crowley, La.
Missouri's representative in the tournament, Washington Post 218, captured the regional championship by defeating Louisiana, 9-1 on Aug.1.
SN Bulldogs fifth at USSSA World Series
The Southern Nevada Bulldogs 12-and-under baseball club competed in the United States Specialty Sports Association's Elite 24 World Series from Aug. 1-6 in Orlando, Fla., and finished in a tie for fifth place out of the 24 best teams in the nation.
The Bulldogs, coached by Scott Baker and Mike DiDonato, finished 5-3 in the tournament and were eliminated by the eventual champions, the Oklahoma City Mets, 5-3, in the quarterfinals.
Southern Nevada scored an average of 6.37 runs in the tourney while allowing an average of 4 runs per game and beat the tournament champion Mets, 3-2, earlier in Orlando. The team now is playing in another national championship tournament which concludes Thursday in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Champs Youth seeking young cheerleaders
Champs Youth Basketball is looking for girls age 5-14 to be a part of Champs Cheerleaders. Participants will receive instruction in cheer, technique, dance, voice projection and precision while receiving cheer experience at games.

Chapman scholarship recipients named
Basic High School's Josh Sillitoe and Green Valley High School's Tiffany Tandy were awarded the Chapman Foundation Scholarship, awarded by the Chapman Foundation for college-bound cross country athletes based on outstanding athletic and academic achievement.
Sillitoe, Fernandez named to hall of fame
Basic High School's Josh Sillitoe and Silverado High School's Kelly Fernandez were elected to the Southern Nevada Cross Country Legends Hall of Fame by garnering at least 75 percent of the vote from local coaches and fellow Legends. The two runners were honored at the ninth annual Legends Run at Lorenzi Park on Aug. 6.
Blake Schlotzhauer, who attended Centennial High School until he moved out of state at the end of his junior year, was the only other candidate who received at least 50 percent of the votes. As a result, Schlotzhauer will remain on the ballot for 2005 and further consideration.
Coaches rank pre-season top 10
Each week during the cross country season a panel of five area coaches will rank their top-10 boys and girls high school cross country teams. Nevada Track Stats (www.nvtrackstats.com) will publish the results of the vote weekly.
Silverado was the top-ranked boys team (49 points) with Shadow Ridge and Palo Verde tied for second place (45). Basic (35), Durango (31), Green Valley (25), Vo-Tech (15), Coronado, Foothill and Bonanza (12 each) rounded out the Top 10 voting.
In the girls' rankings, Green Valley finished on top with 55 points, and was followed by Palo Verde (49), Centennial (43), Foothill (38), Shadow Ridge and Silverado (26 each), Cimarron-Memorial (24), Bishop Gorman and Basic (18 each) and Vo-Tech (11).

Futrell Financial planning tourney
Futrell Financial Management will be holding its first golf tournament on Sept. 21 at Silverstone Golf Course. The tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and will cost $150 per player or $500 per foursome.
The cost includes a shared cart, greens fees, complimentary course beverages, a catered lunch and an awards banquet. There will be a silent auction, sign-in prizes, a raffle and more.
The Las Vegas Lacrosse League is sponsoring a seven-week mini-season for the fall 2005. A modified game format will be used for maximal playing time and fun.
Teams of 12 players will be drafted based on age and experience. Newcomers to the sport are welcome.

MOTORCYCLING
Ride for Kids set for Oct. 9
The inaugural Las Vegas Ride for Kids, a motorcycle road ride benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, will take place at 7 a.m. on Oct. 9. Registration is $35 per motorcycle and will be held at Freddie Spencer's Riding School, 7055 Speedway Blvd., Suite E-106 in the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The ride begins at 9 a.m., rain or shine, and will take riders through the scenic loop at Red Rock Canyon to the end point at Blue Diamond Park.
A 10-week roller hockey season for kids ages 5-14 will be offered this fall. The cost is $125 per child and includes one hour of practice time weekly, jerseys and trophies.
The league also is looking for middle and high school teams and coaches for the upcoming season and also offers adult leagues that play Sunday-Thursday nights.
Registration for the Henderson Girls Softball Association will be held at The Galleria at Sunset Mall (lower level in front of Dick's Sporting Goods) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 3-4.

The HGSA has been serving Clark County for over 14 years and its registration is open to girls of all skill levels ages 5-18 residing in Clark County, including the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City. The registration fee is $100 for one child, $175 for two siblings and $250 for three siblings.
The registration fee includes uniforms, insurance and ASA registration.
The schedule will include practice and 15 league games.

Sandpipers holding several tryouts
Sandpiper Swimming is looking for competitors ages 6-18 who to love to swim.
The team practices at the Desert Breeze Aquatic Center on Spring Mountain Road and Durango Drive and at the Palo Verde High School pool in Summerlin.
The Sandpipers feature nine different swim groups from beginners to nationally ranked swimmers.
Sandpiper Swimming, formed in 1968, is the longest-running year-round swim team in Las Vegas.
Tryouts for the team will be held at Desert Breeze Park Aquatic Center at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 7, Sept. 12 and Sept. 14.
The Sandpipers hold tryouts at the pool every Monday at 4 p.m. year-round.
