Spread the Word Nevada: Kids to Kids is holding a Holiday Book Fair at Barnes & Noble, 567 N. Stephanie St., through Saturday. During the event, customers may come in to shop and upon checkout request that Kids to Kids receive a portion of the sale.
Special events will include a caroling performance from Coronado High School's Madrigal Chorus at 7 p.m. today; holiday story readings by the Las Vegas Gladiators' Lady Goddesses today; and the Mirabelli Children's Chorus performing on Sunday.
All area Barnes & Noble stores are drop-off locations for donations.
Toys for Tots accepted at post offices
Henderson post offices are hosting their annual Toys for Tots Christmas gift drive in association with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Gifts should be dropped off at the following locations between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Dec. 18: 404 Boulder Highway; 1575 Horizon Ridge Parkway; 3055 S. St. Rose Parkway; and 2722 N. Green Valley Parkway.
Gifts should be new and unwrapped, for a boy, girl or young teen. Those unable to visit the post office can donate their gifts through their letter carrier.
Sock drive to benefit homeless youth
The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting Socks for the Season, a sock drive to benefit the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, through Dec. 23.
New socks may be dropped in a specially designated sock box at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing services to homeless children. For more information about Socks for the Season, call 267-5850.
MUSEUM
Local authors to hold book signing today
The Clark County Museum, 1830 S. Boulder Highway, will extend its public hours to 8 p.m. today through Sunday to feature a special exhibit of working model trains in the historic depot, vintage decorations in each of the restored houses, lights on the locomotive and other outdoor locations and free refreshments in the visitors' center.
Today only, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., authors will be on hand to sign books that will be available for purchase at the museum. Included are Joan Whitely, author of "Young Las Vegas: Before the Future Found Us;" A.D. Hopkins, who edited and wrote much of "The First 100: Portraits of the Men and Women Who Shaped Las Vegas;" and Dorothy Wright, representing her husband, the late Frank Wright, author of "Nevada Yesterdays: Short Looks at Las Vegas History."

Singers invited to join holiday concert
The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society invites singers from the community to sing selections from "Messiah" and other Christmas favorites at the annual Christmas with the Musical Arts Society concert, set for 3 p.m. Dec. 18 in the Horn Theatre at CCSN's Cheyenne campus. Get tips for smart and healthy dining
The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a free educational workshop called Dining Out the Smart Way from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway. Participation is open to those 16 years old and up.
The workshop will include activities designed to raise awareness of the hidden fats and salt in restaurant food. The instructor will offer tips and tricks for smarter dining.
