BASEBALL

UNLV staff holding holiday camp

2005 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year Buddy Gouldsmith and his UNLV staff will be holding both a hitting and position camp at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on the campus of UNLV.

The Holiday Hitting Camp is for players ages 7-18 and is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Tuesday to Dec. 28 and costs $150. This two-day camp for hitters will stress the mechanics, mental approach and fundamentals of hitting.

The Holiday Position Camp also is for players ages 7-18 and is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 29 and costs $100. This special one-day camp is for pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders. Proper mechanics, strategy and numerous repetitions will be demonstrated, discussed and implemented.

Paseo Verde league holding registration

Paseo Verde Little League has scheduled registration for the spring baseball season for children ages 5-15, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 7, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28 at Dos Escuelas Park, 1 Golden View in Henderson.

New players should bring a copy of their birth certificate and proof of residency or utility bill. Fees are $80 for tee ball and $100 for other divisions.

TBA holding two Christmas camps

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will be holding two youth basketball camps over the Christmas break.

TBA's Christmas Camp will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and the Holiday Hoop Camp will be held from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Dec. 27-30. Both camps will be held at the Stations Sports Complex, located at 2730 S. Rancho Drive, and are open to boys and girls ages 6-14.

McFarland makes commitment to USC

Durango High School's Andre McFarland has made a verbal commitment to attend the University of Southern California next year.

The 6-foot-5 forward averaged 19.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as a junior for the Trailblazers last year and is ranked as one of the top three prospects in Las Vegas at his position by NevadaPrep.com.

YMCA tourney set for Dec. 29-30

The YMCA invites Clark County School District and local private school eighth-grade basketball teams to participate in the YMCA Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament, set for Dec. 29-30.

Participation is limited to the first eight teams in the boys and girls divisions. Club teams are not eligible to participate.

All teams are guaranteed three games with the first-place division winners receiving trophies. Registration is $300 per team, which includes referee fees.

Games will be played at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane; Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive; and at Faith Lutheran Junior High School, 2015 S. Hualapai Way. Entrance fees for spectators are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for children under 2.

Camp set for Durango Hills YMCA

The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, will hold a holiday basketball camp for boys and girls ages 6-12. Two sessions will be offered, from Monday to Dec. 23 and Dec. 26-30.

The camp will be held Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $55 per child.

LVHS's Gaines is South Bend-bound

Las Vegas High School safety Jashaad Gaines has committed to sign with the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Wildcat senior and 2005 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year helped lead Las Vegas to a 23-0 victory over Hug (12-2) on Dec. 3 at Mackay Stadium in Reno to win the Class 4A State Football Championship. Las Vegas finished the season with a 14-1 record, its only blemish coming in the season opener against Pine View, Utah.

Rough Riders seeking players

The Las Vegas Rough Riders of the Wild West Football League are seeking players for their team for the upcoming 11-man spring season, which begins play in March.

Buccaneers win WWFL championship

The Summerlin Buccaneers defeated the Henderson Wolverines, 12-0, at the Cheyenne Sports Complex on Nov. 20 to win the Wild West Football League's Wild West Championship Bowl II.

The Buccaneers, coached by Malcom Ballard, were a new member to the league, which is planning to expand to 20 teams in 2006.

MARATHON

Silverado High School runner takes 23rd

Silverado High School's Raphael Rodriguez finished 23rd in the New Las Vegas Marathon on Dec. 4, finishing the 26.2-mile course in a time of 2:33:18.

Rodriguez, a senior, was earlier named to the first-team All-Southern League cross country team after finishing 14th in the Class 4A state meet held Nov. 5 at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno with a time of 17:57.00.

POLICE

New world record set in Las Vegas

The 2005 Leopard Challenge Championships were held on Nov. 16 at the Riviera with three teams from Las Vegas -- Nellis SWAT 1, Nellis SWAT 2 and Nellis SWAT 3 -- competing in the event. The Leopard is a highly realistic police officer reaction drill which closely replicates a real-life foot pursuit, officer rescue and suspect apprehension.

The team that won the event was from North Olmstead, Ohio, finishing the course in 3:18.50. The individual winner was Don Nelson of the Road Dawgs (50.67 seconds).

Nellis SWAT 1 (3:23.6) finished third in the event, Nellis SWAT 2 fourth (3:24.80) and Nellis SWAT 3 sixth (4:09.00). Performers in the top 30 finishers from the Las Vegas area included: Richard Paul, Nellis SWAT 2 (59.53, second place); John Swalek, Nellis SWAT 1 (1:00.08, fourth place); Robert McGowan, Nellis SWAT 1 (1:04.46, seventh place); Andrew Manu, Nellis SWAT 3 (1:11.36, 17th); Daniel Harris, Nellis SWAT 2 (1:12.09, 18th); Brett Lafreniere, Nellis SWAT 2 (1:13.18, 20th); Terry Hutchens, Nellis SWAT 1 (1:19.15, 27th); and Josh Derezotes, Nellis SWAT 3 (1:27.21, 30th).

Rebroadcasts of the 2005 Leopard Challenge will be shown on Jan. 8 and Jan. 12 on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN).

City offering a variety of options

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will be offering dozens of classes and activities at its community centers and schools.

There is a plethora of options available, from sports leagues and exercise options to family fun events, after-school programs, educational workshops and leisure activities for all ages.

YMCA to hold teen classes

The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, is holding Teen Strength Training for ages 13 to 17 from 5-7 p.m. every Tuesday, with ongoing monthly sessions. Teens will learn the fundamentals of strength training, proper technique, weight room etiquette, cardiovascular training, nutrition and flexibility.

Silver State Stars holding signups

YMCA plans Junior Academy signups

The Bill & Lillie YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting signups for Junior Sports Academy, a beginner program for children ages 3 to 5 and their parents.

The program will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays from Jan. 14-Feb. 19. It includes two weeks each of soccer, tee ball and basketball in classes led by a YMCA instructor. Equipment is provided.
