Enjoy reading your column, ("First Creek Trail Has an Easy Start," Boulder City View, Nov. 9) although it is a shame we have to share our peaceful "secrets" with the masses.
Along with the quail, toads and dove at First Creek, my boyfriend and I recently observed a mountain lion observing us from his perch above the waterfall. Worth a mention, perhaps.
Keep writing!

JOHN AND VICKI KLUTZ LAS VEGAS
Terrible Herbst spells a Safe Place for kids
Being in Las Vegas for 39 years, I have witnessed incredible changes, as you can imagine. Some good, some not so good. One that comes to mind more often than I would like it to is the difference between my childhood in Vegas and my children's childhood in Vegas.
My sister and I grew up in North Las Vegas. We had friends our age throughout our neighborhood. Getting up in the morning, going outside to meet our friends and staying out all day was not unusual. We were just children and would be gone all day until the streetlights came on. Our parents never had to worry about us. We never had to check in or be supervised outside. We were safe playing outside, running from neighborhood to neighborhood. Now, we can't take our eyes off our children for a second. We have to worry about them and fear for their safety. We have to begin teaching our children as soon as they are old enough to comprehend about "bad people" and "bad situations." We have to teach them that everyone is possible "danger" because, after all, a stranger is going to be the nicest person you meet.
First, I would like to say thank you for your article "Terrible Herbst Offers a Safe Place" (Southwest View, Sept. 7). I have (and will continue) to educate my children about safety. What to look for, where they can go, people they can call, etc. However, I was not aware of the Terrible Herbst Safe Place(s). What an amazing organization/program. Not only are they providing a safe place for our children, they provide a place for self-improvement and encouragement. A bus pass, GED classes, health cards, required work cards, health and dental care, a place to shower, do laundry, etc., use a phone ... this is definitely not just a shelter.
So, once again, I would like to thank you for bringing this to my attention. I would also like to thank Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, Citizen Area Transit, Terrible Herbst Oil Company and, of course, all of the trained employees that are out there working to help keep our children safe.
There's a comfortable feeling knowing that you all are out there for us and words cannot express how much it is appreciated. You are making our community a better place.
