Sun City Summerlin show is planned

The 13th annual Sun City Summerlin Art Club Show is planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 2 and 3 at Desert Vista Community Center, 10360 Sun City Blvd.

FUND-RAISERS

Fashion show to benefit philharmonic

The Las Vegas Philharmonic announces its annual Evening of Elegance and Style, starring fashion designer Carolina Herrera and honoring Lynn and Bill Weidner, 6:30 p.m. April 1 in the Venetian's Palazzo Ballroom.

The evening begins with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres served at a silent auction. Dinner and a live auction hosted by Nate Tannenbaum starts at 7:30 p.m. The evening includes a fashion show.

Seats for An Evening of Elegance and Style are $500 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Las Vegas Philharmonic.

The Diabetes Lions Club of Las Vegas announces a No-limit Texas Hold Em Poker Tournament with registration beginning noon April 10 at Sunset Station Club Madrid Showroom. The tournament begins at 2 p.m.

Registration is $35, buy in is $50 and rebuys are $20. All proceeds will benefit the organization.

Red Rock Pride in America Day planned

Friends of Red Rock, in partnership with the Bureau of Land management and Get Outdoors Nevada, is sponsoring Red Rock Day -- Take Pride in America 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. April 2.

The event promotes volunteerism and taking pride in America. Work projects include installing signs, collecting trash, marking trails and painting.

Everyone is advised to bring work gloves, sunscreen and water bottles.

Volunteers under 18 must have a signed parental permission form. Groups of 10 or more are encouraged to pre-register.

Participants will be treated to a barbecue lunch and live entertainment.

Pools schedule May and June openings

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services offers low-cost, summer fun activities, camps and events for the entire family. The city's seven swimming pools are available for fun in the sun, special events, exercise and competitive team use. Summer day camps and activities are offered at city community schools and community centers for children ages 4 to 15. Available camps and swim classes may be viewed online beginning April 2 at www.clvbeyondtheneon.com. Online and telephone registration for camps and swim classes will begin April 25, and walk-in registration at city of Las Vegas community schools, community centers and the Municipal Pool will begin May 2.

Each pool offers open swimming and learn-to-swim classes. Several city pools offer water polo, competitive swim teams, competitive diving teams, synchronized swimming teams, junior lifeguard training and adult water fitness classes.

The Pavilion Center outdoor pool also offers introductory classes to scuba diving and kayaking. The Municipal Pool, located at 431 E. Bonanza Road, is open year-round. Doolittle and Pavilion Center pools will be open May 28 through September 5. The Baker, Cragin, Garside and Hadland outdoor pools will be open June 13 through August 13. Season passes are available.

Family seeks funds to fight mother's cancer

Las Vegas resident Denyse Wortham was recently diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and hers is a very aggressive cancer. Wortham is undergoing chemotherapy treatments however, her best chances for a complete recovery reside in Houston at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. The cost for a one-week stay including testing is estimated at $20,000 and is not covered by her insurance plan.

The family is seeking to raise the funds to help Wortham and her husband, Joe, make the trip to Houston while also providing ongoing financial support to their family of seven.

HEALTH

Grief counseling offered for children

The Center for Compassionate Care, a non-profit counseling agency, is introducing new children and teen support programs specializing in childhood grief and loss issues.

"Children grieve as early at two years old, but not the same way adults do," said Garnette Landry, bereavement services coordinator. "The Center acknowledges these differences and tailors counseling sessions to the needs of children and young teens."

The Children and Teen Support Groups are available every Tuesday night through April 26.

The Children Support Groups, for ages 6 to 11, are from 5 to 6 p.m. and Teen Support Groups, for ages 12 to 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. Sessions will be conducted at the Walter L Schwartz Center for Compassionate Care building, 4131 Swenson Street. For more information call 796-3184.

Double Chai Health Fair planned

The Men's Club of Temple Beth Sholom plans a Double Chai Health Fair on April 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane. Booths will provide screening evaluations for glaucoma, osteoporosis, diabetic risk, blood pressure, cholesterol and oral cancer.

The Health Fair is open to the communitywith a $5 donation.
