BASKETBALL

Memorial Day tournament set

Tarkanian Basketball Academy will be holding a 3-on-3 Memorial Day Tournament May 28-30 at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 S. Rancho Drive. The cost is $25 per participant and features both men's and women's and youth and adult divisions.

Mountain Cat camp set for June

The Mountain Cat Basketball Camp is scheduled for June 28-30 at the Harney Middle School gym, 1625 Los Feliz St.

The camp is open to children in grades 1-12 and will run from 5-8 p.m. daily. Cost of the camp is $50 before June 1 and $70 afterwards. There is a $10 discount for all campers returning from last year.

AQUATICS

'Get In Synch Weeks' starts on Monday

The City of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will celebrate "Get In Synch Weeks" Monday through June 3 to introduce more local students to the sport of synchronized swimming.

A meet sanctioned by the United States Synchronized Swimming Association will be held at Pavilion Center Pool on May 21 and 22. The meet will be hosted by the Las Vegas Synchronized Swimming Association. As many as 300 swimmers from the Southwest, including local athletes from the Southern Nevada Desert Mermaids and the Las Vegas Synchronettes, will compete in figures, teams and solo events. Winners at this meet will qualify for national competition. The public is welcome to attend the event and watch the competitions free of charge.

Area swimmers will demonstrate synchronized swimming May 23 through June 3 during regularly scheduled physical education classes in area schools, and then answer questions from students about the sport. Demonstrations will be held at Garside Pool, 300 S. Torrey Pines Drive; Cragin Pool, 900 Hinson St.; Baker Pool, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave.; Hadland Pool, 2800 E. Stewart Ave.; and Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive.

Desert Mermaids seeking members

The Southern Nevada Desert Mermaids, a competitive nationally ranked synchronized swim team, is looking for new members.

If you love dancing and swimming and are between the ages of 6-18, call Monica at 562-5016 or 592-1872. The club offers a free, two-week trial period for anyone interested.

Rebel Aquatics offering program

Team Rebel Aquatics, a year-round competitive swimming program, is seeking new members between the ages of 5-18. Minimum requirement for a tryout is to be able to swim 25 yards in the pool using any stroke.

Tryouts are from 5-7 p.m. on Mondays. A birth certificate and $50 registration fee are required at time of registration. For more information, call 385-7946.

MOTORSPORTS

New high school drag series starts Friday

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host the LVMS High School Drag Racing Series presented by Meadow Gold and Short Line Express Markets starting Friday as part of its GlobePC.com Show 'n' Go Friday Series.

The five-race series is open to all registered high school students and will be held Friday, June 10, July 15 and Aug. 12 and Sept. 16.

Each race winner will receive $100, a trophy, a winner's decal and an LVMS hat. Each racer's best four finishes will count toward the points championship.

All participants under 18 years of age must have a completed parental consent form on file with LVMS. Forms are available at the front desk, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Summer Nationals tourney coming up

All local softball teams are invited to participate in the NASF Summer National softball tournament May 21 at Sunset Park. Teams from California, Arizona, Utah, Washington and New Mexico have already entered.

Entry fee is $350 per team. There is a four-game guarantee. All bats are legal and there is a five home run limit per game. There is also a 12-hitter option and unlimited courtesy runners. There also will be a home run contest with a $500 gift package going to the winner.

Tournament award package for the top four teams includes Mizuno bat bags, Mizuno jackets, Easton pullovers, Rawlings baseball gloves, Under-Armour shirts, pro hats and NASF championship T-shirts.

Elks are planning a charity tourney

The Las Vegas Elks Charity Golf Tournament will be held Saturday at Silverstone Golf Club. All proceeds will benefit the Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf.

The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. The cost is $100 per player. There will be two hole-in-one prizes sponsored by Desert Buick and a trip to the 2006 Masters awarded.

Cavalier Lounge event set for Desert Rose

The Cavalier Lounge & Restaurant has scheduled a golf tournament at 8 a.m. on May 21 at the Desert Rose Golf Course.

The format is best ball scramble with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $75 per person and the deadline is Saturday. A luncheon follows at the Cavalier Lounge.

Alzheimer's event coming to Aliante

The first Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on June 4 at the Sun City Aliante Golf Course. All proceeds from the tourney will go directly to the Alzheimer's Association.

The cost is $75 per player and includes green fees, cart, range balls, barbecue and donation to the Alzheimer's Association. The tourney will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start and will be played in a four-person scramble format. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on the morning of the tourney.

There also will be a 50/50 putting contest which will cost $5 and other on-course events, including a closest to the pin contest, a hole-in-one event and a longest drive contest. A raffle also will be held with tickets costing $5 for one, $10 for three or $20 for eight.

KB Home set to hold Charity Classic

KB Home is inviting the public to participate in the company's third annual Charity Golf Classic on June 9 at Paiute Golf Resort. The money raised will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada.

Green fees are $1,200 per team or $400 per person. Participants will be treated to a continental breakfast, an awards luncheon and the opportunity to win various raffle prizes.

LV Rescue Mission hosting competition

The Las Vegas Rescue Mission will be hosting its first annual golf tournament at 7 a.m. June 11 at Angel Park Golf Course. All proceeds from the tournament go to benefit the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, an organization which has been serving the homeless and hungry in the community since 1970.

The day will begin with check-in and breakfast at 6 a.m. and follows with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $129 per player and includes continental breakfast, golf and lunch.

The tournament will be run in the four-person scramble format and will use the Peoria Scoring System. Mulligans will cost $5 and include one free drawing ticket for each. Additional drawing tickets also will be available for purchase. A barbecue buffet lunch, tournament awards, raffle prize drawing and silent auction will follow the tournament.

Locals star at Easter tourney

Several locals were finalists at the regional Easter Circuit tennis tournament held in Las Vegas.

The Boys' 12 Singles Champion was Kristofer Yee. Jeff Vongman was a finalist.

The Boys' 14 Singles Champion was David Nichols. The Girls' 12 Singles Champion was Chrissy Uriarte, and the Girls' 14 Singles Champion was Alexis Garrett.

The Girls' 16 Singles Champion was Julia Baltas, and the Girls' 18 Singles Champion was Farwa Husain.
