BASKETBALL

Memorial Day tournament set

Tarkanian Basketball Academy will be holding a 3-on-3 Memorial Day Tournament May 28-30 at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 S. Rancho Drive. The cost is $25 per participant and features both men's and women's and youth and adult divisions.

Mountain Cat camp set for June

The Mountain Cat Basketball Camp is scheduled for June 28-30 at the Harney Middle School gym, 1625 Los Feliz St.

The camp is open to children in grades 1-12 and will run from 5-8 p.m. daily. Cost of the camp is $50 before June 1 and $70 afterwards. There is a $10 discount for all campers returning from last year.

AQUATICS

Desert Mermaids seeking members

The Southern Nevada Desert Mermaids, a competitive nationally ranked synchronized swim team, is looking for new members.

If you love dancing and swimming and are between the ages of 6-18, call Monica at 562-5016 or 592-1872. The club offers a free, two-week trial period for anyone interested.

Rebel Aquatics offering program

Team Rebel Aquatics, a year-round competitive swimming program, is seeking new members between the ages of 5-18. Minimum requirement for a tryout is to be able to swim 25 yards in the pool using any stroke.

Tryouts are held from 5-7 p.m. on Mondays. A birth certificate and $50 registration fee are required at time of registration. For more information, call 385-7946.

SOCCER

Free soccer festival set for May 27

The Southridge Neighborhood Association is presenting a free co-ed soccer festival from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 27 at Baker Park, 1020 E. St. Louis. The festival is open to all players and their families.

Gorman player signs with Oregon school

Bishop Gorman soccer player Chris Smerke has signed a letter of intent to attend NAIA Concordia University in Portland, Ore.

Las Vegas Strikers win first game

The Las Vegas Strikers captured their first win of the season on April 29 at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex by defeating the previously unbeaten Albuquerque Asylum, 3-2. The Strikers got goals from Reggie Bolden, Levi Parker and Robbie Adams in the win.

The Strikers' next home game will be on June 17 against Sacramento.

FOOTBALL

Eldorado lineman signs letter of intent

Eldorado High School's Matthew Manfra has signed a letter of intent to play at Montana State-Northern University. Manfra, a 5-foot-11, 255-pound lineman, is expected to play defensive end for the NAIA school.

SOFTBALL

Summer Nationals set for Saturday

All local softball teams are invited to participate in the NASF Summer National softball tournament Saturday at Sunset Park. Teams from California, Arizona, Utah, Washington and New Mexico will compete.

Entry fee is $350 per team. There is a four-game guarantee. All bats are legal and there is a five home run limit per game. There is also a 12-hitter option and unlimited courtesy runners. There also will be a home run contest with a $500 gift package going to the winner.

GOLF

Lamping to Hold golf tournament

Lamping Elementary School in Henderson has planned its second Lightning Bolt Open golf tournament at 1 p.m. May 20 at the Siena Golf Club, 10575 Siena Monte Ave. The event will raise funds to build the William McCool Science center on the school's campus.

The cost for foursomes are $800 including tee sponsorship, while individual golfers can play for $225. The entry fee includes a boxed lunch and dinner after the tournament.

Players can register by calling the school at 799-1330 or by visiting the school's Web site at www.lampingelementary.com.

Alzheimer's event coming to Aliante

The first Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on June 4 at the Sun City Aliante Golf Course. All proceeds from the tourney will go directly to the Alzheimer's Association.

The cost is $75 per player and includes green fees, cart, range balls, barbecue and donation to the Alzheimer's Association. The tourney will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start and will be played in a four-person scramble format. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on the morning of the tourney.

There also will be a 50/50 putting contest which will cost $5 and other on-course events, including a closest to the pin contest, a hole-in-one event and a longest drive contest. A raffle also will be held with tickets costing $5 for one, $10 for three or $20 for eight.

KB Home set to hold Charity Classic

KB Home is inviting the public to participate in the company's third annual Charity Golf Classic on June 9 at Paiute Golf Resort. The money raised will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada.

Green fees are $1,200 per team or $400 per person. Participants will be treated to a continental breakfast, an awards luncheon and the opportunity to win various raffle prizes.

LV Rescue Mission hosting competition

The Las Vegas Rescue Mission will be hosting its first annual golf tournament at 7 a.m. June 11 at Angel Park Golf Course. All proceeds from the tournament go to benefit the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, an organization which has been serving the homeless and hungry in the community since 1970.

The day will begin with check-in and breakfast at 6 a.m. and follows with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $129 per player and includes continental breakfast, golf and lunch.

The tournament will be run in the four-person scramble format and will use the Peoria Scoring System. Mulligans will cost $5 and include one free drawing ticket for each. Additional drawing tickets also will be available for purchase. A barbecue buffet lunch, tournament awards, raffle prize drawing and silent auction will follow the tournament.

LEAGUES

Hoops, soccer leagues offered

The City of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services' Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center will be hosting basketball and indoor soccer leagues this summer. There are several leagues to choose from for ages 3 1/2 to 12-year-olds.

The Co-ed Youth Basketball League is for ages 12 and under with three divisions depending on age and ability. The cost is $65 for nine weeks and games will be held on Saturdays between 1-6 p.m. The Co-ed Lil' Biddy Basketball and Indoor Soccer Leagues are for ages 3 1/2 to 6 years. The fee for this league is $65 for eight weeks and games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Registration is currently underway and continues through Saturday with games beginning the week of June 13. All league fees include a T-shirt. The leagues will be held at the center located at 101 North Pavilion Center Drive in Summerlin. If you are interested in participating in the one of the leagues, you can register at the center or online at www.clvbeyondtheneon.com.
