Traditional Jewish music to be performed
A collection of Klezmer music will be presented at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Flamingo Library Theatre, 1401 E. Flamingo Drive. Klezmer, a Hebrew word meaning "vessel of song," is a style of music created by the Jewish communities of 19th-century Eastern Europe. The performance, by the musical group Klezmerica, will feature composer, pianist and band leader Joe Vass, drummer Joe Maier Epstein, woodwinds player Dale Mendenhall, violinist Yuri Merzhevsky, and keyboard player Michael O'Brien.

Former governor, mayor plan BIG Gala
Former Nevada Governor Bob Miller and former Las Vegas Mayor Ron Lurie are co-chairs for the annual BIG Gala to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada. The annual gala will take place on Saturday at the MGM Mirage Grand Ballroom. KLAS News Anchor Dave Courvoisier will be the evening's Master of Ceremony. The BIG Gala will carry out its "Dream the Magic" theme with interactive performances, artists, live music, and dinner, as well as silent and live auctions.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada is a youth services agency that matches children with mentors in one-to-one relationships.
Individual tickets to the benefit are $300. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be at 8 p.m.

Tai Ji master to offer lecture
Chungliang Al Huang, Tai Ji master, will present "Living Tao: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Living," at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the Barrick Museum Auditorium on UNLV's campus.
Using calligraphy, metaphors from nature and Eastern philosophy, Chungliang will discuss his beliefs about achieving balance, harmony and self-cultivation. Admission is free.

Adoption information fair set for Saturday
Prospective parents are invited to the eighth annual Adoption Fair, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Clark County Government Center, 500 Grand Central Parkway.
The event is free and open to the public. It brings together prospective parents, children hoping to be adopted and professionals interested in finding permanent homes for local children who are waiting to be adopted.
Public and private adoption agencies will be represented, including the Clark County Department of Family Services, Catholic Charities and LDS Social Services. Those who attend also can get information from representatives of Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children in foster care, and various foster care agencies that help abused and neglected children.

Craft show and food drive scheduled
A craft show and food drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 12 at Deep Roots Christian Church, 5611 Tenaya Way.
The event will feature one-of-a-kind goodies and gifts for the upcoming holidays. There will be multiple raffles each day. Families are welcome.

Club raises money for animal sanctuary
The Stirling Club at Turnberry Place is hosting the fourth annual Jewelry, Wine and Gift Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 12 to raise money for the Heaven Can Wait Animal Sanctuary.
Rita Rudner will be the guest speaker and the luncheon is open to the public. A silent auction will be part of the event. The cost is $45 per person.
Heaven Can Wait is a nonprofit organization with the goal of eliminating the killing of more than 24,000 cats and dogs annually in Las Vegas area shelters. Funds raised will be used to spay and neuter homeless cats and dogs.

Ten residents win free monorail passes
On Oct. 17, 10 Las Vegas valley residents received free lifetime passes to the Las Vegas Monorail. The recipients are the winners of a sweepstakes conducted by BankWest of Nevada to launch its three-year promotional program with the Las Vegas Monorail Company.
Thousands of Southern Nevada residents entered the sweepstakes, called "We Take You Where You Want to Go." A. Wayne Harmon, Bonnie Butler, Bruce Doughty, Bruce Kneebone, Darla Anderson, George Taylor, Lacy Gibson, Michael Benjamin, Shirley M. Celestine and Tom Ruesenberg won the passes.
