In a new fundraising effort, the Las Vegas Junior Giants program is gearing up to host its first Golf Classic on Friday.

The inaugural tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. at the Las Vegas Golf Club, 4300 W. Washington Ave. All proceeds will benefit the Las Vegas Junior Giants to assist with the maintenance of their fields and travel opportunities.

Golf enthusiasts of all levels are invited to participate in this 18-hole fundraiser.

"We need the support of the community in order to continue to provide at-risk children with programs that empower them for life," Las Vegas Junior Giants Commissioner Gene Tate said. "The Junior Giants program is designed to help children who want to be successful but need a little guidance. We can't do it alone. We need the community's support."

Sponsorship levels include gold -- $1,000 for four golfers, signage on two holes and one green, silver -- $500 for four golfers and signage on one hole, or bronze -- $250 for four golfers. Individuals also are encouraged to play.

Interested golfers should write their tax deductible check to Las Vegas Junior Giants. Entry fees are $75 for single golfer, $125 for couple and $250 for a foursome.

Businesses who donate auction items may be eligible to golf in the tournament, promote their company, products and services and may be highlighted within the community. Golf carts also are included for sponsoring companies and teams of four.

The Las Vegas Junior Giants program is the local affiliate of Junior Giants -- in conjunction with Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants -- and is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of baseball in a free, noncompetitive environment.

Junior Giants, presented by Bank of America, is the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, a nonprofit organization. The program was created to provide underserved children ages 5-18 living in inner cities and rural communities throughout California, Nevada and Oregon the opportunity to run the bases, rather than the streets, each summer.
