The Las Vegas Warriors Baseball Club is holding open tryouts to form an 11-and-under competitive club baseball team. Emphasis will be placed on developing strong fundamentals, physical conditioning and baseball strategy.

Las Vegas Hawks seeking players
The 11-and-under Las Vegas Hawks are looking for baseball players to fill a few roster spots. The Hawks are a Little League-friendly traveling team that plays in tournaments in and out of Las Vegas.

Falcon Tune-Up starts Monday
Foothill Falcon Basketball will hold its annual Preseason Basketball Tune-Up camp from 5-8 p.m. from Monday to Nov. 9 in the Foothill High School gym, 800 College Drive. The camp is open to boys and girls entering grades 3-9.
The $70 registration fee will include a camp T-shirt and awards.
Local high school cross country teams participated in the Southern Nevada Division Championships on Oct. 15.
The top boys finisher on the 3-mile course was Silverado's Solomon Bennett (15:52), while Wendy Harris of Lund High School was the top female finisher (17:58).
In the Sunrise Southeast, Silverado's boys (38) and Green Valley's girls (38) were the top placing teams while Valley's boys team (41) and Las Vegas' girls team (24) took top honors in the Northeast.
In the Sunset Southwest, Durango's boys (22) and Clark's girls team (31) were the winners, while Shadow Ridge's boys (35) and Cimarron-Memorial's girls (35) teams claiming top honors in the Northwest.
In the class AA-AAA meet, Faith Lutheran's boys (39) and girls (15) teams were victorious, while Green Valley's boys (52) and girls (36) teams won the title in the junior varsity competition.
Silverado, Green Valley top cross country polls
Each week during the cross country season a panel of area coaches ranks the top 10 boys and girls high school cross country teams. Nevada Track Stats (www.nvtrackstats.com) publishes the weekly results.
For the sixth week of the poll, Silverado was the top-ranked boys' team (50 points), with Foothill (45), Shadow Ridge (37), Coronado (37), Basic (28), Cimarron-Memorial (22), Green Valley (19), Palo Verde (16), Durango (14) and Mojave (3) rounding out the top 10 voting.
In the girls' rankings, Green Valley (50) took the lead from Foothill (37), which slipped to fourth. Palo Verde (42), was second, with Cimarron (31) in third. Centennial (30), Vo-Tech (24), Clark (19), Las Vegas (17), Shadow Ridge (9) and Coronado (4) filled out the voting.
Track stars awarded weekly Yellow Jacket
Nevada Track Stats and Young Life have teamed up for a second year to present a weekly award known as the Yellow Jersey to Southern Nevada cross country athletes.
For their performances at the Frosh-Soph Championship, Pierre Flores of Rancho, Kourtney Campbell of Basic and Jacob Thornell of Bonanza were recognized, while on the girls' side, Anesia Rich and Tiffany Hutton of Cimarron-Memorial were honored.
For their performances at the Divisional Championships, Gabe Rivera of Foothill, Philmon Girmay of Valley, Rich Tausinga of Durango, Colby Evans of Mojave and Derek Fajardo of Laughlin were Yellow Jersey honorees, along with Heather Holmstrom of Foothill, Gabriela Benito of Las Vegas, Samantha Jennings of Clark, Laura Bland of Palo Verde and Erin Szelagowski of Pahrump Valley.

Youth group sets mid-season auditions
Dance Xpress, a performance group for girls ages 4-16, will be holding its mid-season auditions from 12-1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the UNLV McDermott P.E. Building.

FENCING
Jennings named new instructor
The Fencing Academy of Nevada, located at the Las Vegas Sports Park, named Susan Jennings its newest fencing instructor. Jennings has competed at the national level since 1993 and was a four-time All-American while at Columbia University. She also was an Intercollegiate Fencing Association champion and All-Ivy League first-team member for four years.
In 1998, Jennings was a member of the Junior World team and in 1999, a member of the Bronze medal-winning Pan-American team. She has consistently held top-8 national rankings in foil and has completed in numerous World Cup events worldwide.
FOOTBALL
Western's Sample named Ironman
The Las Vegas Gladiators, in partnership with KVBC-TV, Channel 3's, "Operation: Football," awarded Julian Sample of Western High School with the Gladiators Ironman Award for the eighth week of the 2005 high school football season.
Sample, the Warriors' senior quarterback and captain, led Western (7-0) to a 34-0 win over Bonanza on Oct. 14 and led the Warriors in both passing and rushing, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for another.
Sample also excels in the classroom, sporting a 3.08 grade-point average.
FUNDRAISING
Wranglers to hold hurricane relief night
Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Rita and its effects on the Texas Wildcatters professional hockey team, the Las Vegas Wranglers have made a change to the schedule, adding a home game Friday and donating $5 for every ticket sold for the game to hurricane relief efforts.
For each $5 donation made by the Wranglers, the Nevada law firm of Kummer Kaempfer Bonner Renshaw & Ferrario will match the amount, donating up to $15,000 for relief efforts.
The matchup between the Phoenix Roadrunners and the Wranglers starts at 7:05 p.m. at The Orleans Arena. Fans may order tickets by phone at 284-7777 or on by logging on to www.orleansarena.com or www.lasvegaswranglers.com.
Ninety percent of the law firm's donation will be given to the American Red Cross, and 10 percent will be provided to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Officials donate checks for relief
All officials who worked high schools football games in Southern Nevada on Oct. 6 and 7 donated their checks to support hurricane relief around the country.
The Southern Nevada Officials Association also added to the pot, bringing the total donation to $4,500, which was given to the American Red Cross.
Poker tourney raises over $8,000
The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities hosted its second annual Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament on Oct. 19 at The Cannery and raised over $8,000 during its evening of Cards for Kids.
NHRA Top Fuel Dragster drivers Brandon Bernstein, Cory McClenathan, Dave Grubnic, Rod Fuller and Jack Beckman participated in the event with fans and poker players from around the country. McClenathan was the top NHRA finisher, placing third overall. The top five finishers were Jeff Motley of Las Vegas, Jessica Cooper of Rainier, Wash., McClenathan, Paul Coronado of North Las Vegas and Dave Rutherford of Las Vegas. Motley won a five-day, four-night trip to Hawaii courtesy of Fairfield Resorts.
Speedway Children's Charities (www.speedwaycharities.org) is a nonprofit foundation based in Charlotte, N.C., that distributes funds to charities and foundations providing medical, emotional and social services to children in need. Last December, the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities distributed more than $275,000 to 51 local causes which directly impact the lives of children in the Las Vegas and southern Nevada region.

Dragster takes the prize at Top Comp
Jess Nelson of Maricopa, Ariz., won the Mike's Transmission Top Comp Association race No. 8 on Oct. 16 in his 2003 Undercover dragster.
Other winners included David Lass of Pahrump, who won the Super Pro class in his 1972 Barracuda, Neil Evans of Las Vegas, who won the Pro class in his 1973 Duster, and Rick Emanuel of Las Vegas, who won the Street class race in his 1974 Nova.

Ducks Unlimited banquet planned
The Las Vegas Chapter of Ducks Unlimited is hosting its annual Sportsman's Extravaganza banquet on Thursday in the Mardi Gras Ballroom at The Orleans. Tickets are $100 per person, $500 per sponsor member and $1,800 for a corporate table of 10. All tickets include a Ducks Unlimited membership for one year.

Fall coed league registration under way
Home Courts is now registering teams for its fall coed leagues. Registration fees are $170.
Competitors and spectators of all ages are welcome to enjoy the competitive games of the 5th annual Las Vegas Wheelchair Over-the-Line Tournament, to be held at the city of Las Vegas Wheelchair Sports Park in Freedom Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Freedom Park is located on East Washington Avenue at Mojave Road.
Admission for spectators is free. The $25 competition fee for a team of four and $10 fee for an individual includes lunch and a souvenir T-shirt.
Participants will compete in two divisions. Youth ages 7-15 will compete in the BlazeSports junior division, while those 16 years and older will play in the adult division. Teams of three players each will bat a softball and field while seated in a wheelchair. Teams will be made from individual registrants the morning of the event.
The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club will hold a game clinic for participants to learn the game at 9 a.m. before the tournament begins. Participants should register and pay fees by Thursday.

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is offering a TOTS (Toddler Opportunities Through Sports and Fitness) program for parents who would like to spend more time with their toddler or primary-age child in a fun and stimulating environment.
The academy provides a safe place, which includes a state-of-the-art sports facility that houses an inflatable child's obstacle course with a slide. The academy also has mini-obstacle courses that feature balance, gymnastics apparatus, strength-building games and activities as well as art stations and mini-basketball hoops to develop fine motor skills and coordination.
