CHILDREN

Books to be collected for local schools

Clark County READS and Washington Mutual are joining forces to collect new and gently-used children's books to be used in schools throughout the Clark County School District. The book drive began on Oct. 1 and will continue until Oct. 27 at all Washington Mutual branches in Las Vegas.

Clark County READS has partnered with various community supporters for the past four years to collect more than 50,000 new and gently used books for children ages 4 through 12.

Books are sorted and distributed to teachers in the Clark County School District for use in their classrooms or to give away to their students.

For more information about Clark County READS, call 799-5437, or visit www.clarkcountyreads.org. For more information on Washington Mutual or for branches nearby, visit www.wamu.com or call (800) 788-7000.

DRIVING

DMV is ready for the new teen driver laws

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has released new and updated training materials to help Nevada teenagers and their parents comply with Nevada's new laws for drivers under age 18.

The 48-page "Nevada Beginning Driver Training Guide" contains lessons to help parents teach their teenagers safe driving. The guides are available at www.dmvnv.com/teens. Printed versions are being distributed to DMV offices statewide.

New restrictions on teen drivers, passed by the 2005 Nevada Legislature, went into effect Oct. 1. Among other provisions, teens must now keep a written log of the required behind-the-wheel experience and be 16 years old before they can receive a full license. The new laws limit the teen's ability to carry passengers for the first three months and limit night driving until the new driver turns 18.

HEALTH SCREENING

PGA pro to help boost AKS awareness

Two-time PGA Tour winner Steve Flesch will team up with Dermik Laboratories to host the Tee Off Against AKS campaign at the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas. Tee Off Against AKS is a public awareness campaign designed to educate the golf community about actinic keratoses (AKs) -- pre-cancerous skin lesions -- and the need for proper skin protection. Flesch will be joined by local board-certified dermatologists, who will provide event participants and spectators with free skin cancer screenings. Consumers also will have an opportunity to have their photo taken with a special UV-camera that will show the extent of existing sun damage on their face at the Carac? sponsorship tent at Tournament Players Club at Summerlin.

Flesch will appear at the Carac? sponsorship tent today from 3 to 4 p.m. to share his personal experience battling AKs. In addition, free skin cancer screenings will be offered today, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
