There's nothing like a weekend in Sierra Nevada to remind you that while winter weather has yet to settle in the Las Vegas Valley, it's on its way.
After returning from the mountains and de-frosting, I decided to take a look at some of the winter accessories even desert-dwellers will probably want by the time November rolls around.
Though there are a lot of options for staying warm this season, a few staples -- including beanie hats and the always comforting wool scarf -- have remained popular, while accessories with accents of fur, beading and metal grommets are also popular but should be used sparingly.
J. Crew carries men's hats in a variety of styles, including wool and cashmere ski caps, and for the more adventurous man, driving and newsboy caps ($42-$45). They also have a wide selection of scarves in wool, cashmere and cotton in solid and striped designs ($58-$68).
Banana Republic also carries men's winter accessories, including the everyday-use ski and beanie caps in wool ($28-$48) as well as several more daring styles including fedoras, modern and traditional driving caps, brimmed beanies and military caps ($28-$58). While these styles will keep your noggin warm and set you apart from the crowd, it also takes a lot of confidence and style to pull them off, so try them on and get an honest friend's opinion before you buy.
Banana also carries men's scarves and gloves in wool and cashmere ($28-$98), including a particularly indulgent pair of leather gloves lined with cashmere ($68). These alone might make up for the occasional discomfort of winter weather.
Both stores also carry women's accessories, including J. Crew's basic pom-pom hats and trapper hats with fur trim, and felt Andie hats that combine warmth and style ($28-$125). J. Crew also has a selection of women's scarves that ranges from everyday wool and cashmere in two-tone, solid, striped and argyle styles ($49.50-$78) to uber-luxurious mink and rabbit fur-lined collars and scarves ($195-$425) for those times when you just have to treat yourself, and gloves in wool, cashmere and leather ($29.50-$165). Not to be outdone, Banana Republic also carries women's scarves in the usual cashmere, wool and cotton in ribbed and knit styles ($28-$78) and fancier scarves in boucle-ribbed, crochet styles, as well as sparkled mohair ($28) silk scarves in metallic tones ($48-$58). Banana also has wool hats in bucket and beanie styles, cashmere earflap hats ($22-$58) and women's fedoras and wide-brimmed floppy hats.
Ugg's Australia shearling scarf, hat and gloves, available at Nordstrom ($105 each) provide warmth and just the right amount of wool lining to keep you warm and stylish. And because a matching gloves, hat and scarf set always helps the wearer look a bit more pulled together, Nordstrom also carries its own brand of knit chenille glove, hat and scarf sets ($18, $18 and $38, respectively) in a variety of colors.
So have fun with your winter wrap-ups, and remember that the right accessories will pull every cold-weather look together.
