Goodwill responds to Katrina evacuees
The grand opening of the Cheyenne Superstore kicked off on Sept. 8 with a monthlong effort to collect cash donations from Goodwill customers for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
On opening day, Goodwill of Southern Nevada matched cash donations, up to $1,000, from customers at all eight Goodwill stores.
The Cheyenne Superstore also is collecting shoes and clothing for evacuees from Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi who are in need, and $25 gift certificates are available to any donators who bring supplies to the Goodwill Corporate office at 1280 W. Cheyenne Ave. in North Las Vegas. The office can be reached at 214-2000 or by visiting www.sngoodwill.org.
Local church donates funds to victims
South Hills Church Community, located at 2298 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, Suite 209, donated $30,000 to hurricane relief. For more information, call 616-6700 or e-mail info@south-hills.org.
The American Red Cross needs volunteers
The Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross needs volunteers with casework processing experience.
Residents who have data entry and social service casework experience are needed to help process evacuees coming to Southern Nevada. The Red Cross set up a 24-hour volunteer processing center at its main office, 1771 E. Flamingo Road, Suite 206 B. Residents who work as social workers or have experience working in doctors' offices, insurance companies, human resource departments and school offices have the necessary skills. Volunteers are asked to come directly to the Red Cross' office and should plan to report for eight-hour shifts.
Red Cross officials also emphasize the need for financial donations to the Red Cross to assist hurricane victims locally and nationally. The agency can be reached at 791-3311.
Station Casinos Inc. and Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air teamed up to host the first group of firefighters and their families, Sept. 6, from New Orleans, who traveled to the city for a much-needed break from the stress of recent recovery efforts.
Approximately 40 to 50 police and firefighters rotated accommodations at area hotels every three to four days for about a month.
