The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services and the Nevada Ballet Theatre announce Ballet Under the Stars, scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday at Hills Park, 9000 Hillpointe Road.
Inspired by the king of ragtime, "Joplin!" along with the addition of one-act ballets mark this production as an innovative departure from the traditional. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

Songwriter is set to perform at Borders
Award-winning singer-songwriter Anne E. DeChant is slated to appear 2-4 p.m. Sept. 11 for a solo acoustic appearance at Borders Books, Music, & Caf , 2190 N. Rainbow Blvd.
She released her latest CD "Pop The Star" in May of 2004. It is produced by Don Dixon whose resume includes credits with R.E.M., Hootie and the Blowfish, The Counting Crows, Joe Cocker and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services announces Gloria Loring in An Afternoon with Friends and Lovers, scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at The Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Loring's singing career spans three decades of recording although some may know her best from her six years on "Days of Our Lives."

Musical Arts Society seeks singers
The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society invites interested singers to perform the music of Mozart, Brahms and Mendelssohn with the Musical Arts Chorus and Orchestra in its upcoming 43rd season.

Event to honor retiring conductor
The Las Vegas Philharmonic Guild invites friends in the community to enjoy Dinner & Dancing Under the Stars, a salute to Harold Leighton Weller, founder and music director of The Las Vegas Philharmonic. Weller plans to retire at the end of the 2006/2007 season.

Art Awareness luncheon planned
Nevada Art Advocates plans an art awareness luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 14 at the Stardust. The event will include speakers on ethnic music for retention and include a performance by the Mariachi Oro de Rancho High School band.

Libraries put on a few new shows for fall
The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District announces a number of exhibits for the fall.
Starting Thursday, West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd., will host the works of Gustavo Sanchez whose images and maquettes will be on display through Nov. 6.
From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., will have the paintings of Gerald Sequiera. An artist reception is planned for 5-7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the library.
Sahara West Library also will host an exhibit for the month of November by local artisans Leonard Gene and Rosie Taylor. They will display their award-winning American Indian jewelry designs and hand-woven rugs and blankets.
California artist Cynthia Hurley is slated to have an exhibit Sept. 16 through Nov. 13 at Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.
Known for her contemplative paintings of desert and vernal pool imagery, she's been a resident artist of the Joshua Tree National Park. An artist reception is scheduled for 5:307:30 p.m. Sept. 16.

Rainbow company announces lineup
The city of Las Vegas Rainbow Company Youth Theatre, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North announces its 2005-2006 season lineup.
Five shows are scheduled: "Wiley and the Hairy Man," Sept. 30-Oct. 9; "Miss Nelson is Missing," Dec. 2-12; "Snowshoes Across the Sierra," Feb. 10-19; "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," April 7-16; and "The Little Mermaid," June 2-11. All shows have a two-week run.

Hawaiian songwriter to perform in park
Hawaiian singer/songwriter Keola Beamer is slated to appear 8 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Sammy Davis Jr. Plaza in Lorenzi Park, 700 Twin Lakes Drive.
Best known for writing and recording "Honolulu City Lights," one of the all-time best-selling songs in the Hawaiian music genre, Beamer can trace his roots back to the 15th Century. That influence is heard in his contemporary music. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the gate.

NDOT rep to talk about 95 widening project
A Nevada Department of Transportation representative plans to make an updated presentation on the project to widen U.S. Highway 95 at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, at the Howard Lieburn Senior Center, 6230 Garwood Ave., near the intersection of U.S. 95 and Jones Boulevard.
The event is free and open to the public and will include a video presentation, an overview of the project, details on what has already been done and what can be expected in the future.

Group plans an alzheimer's fundraiser
A Memory Walk kick-off and open house is slated for 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 at the Alzheimer's Association, 5190 S. Valley View Blvd., Suite. 101. This year's walk is scheduled for Nov. 5 at the Hills Park.
