TBA holding sign-ups for fall league
The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will hold sign-ups for its fall basketball league at 6 p.m. today and Thursday at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 S. Rancho Drive. Coach preferences and practice times/location will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendance is required at one of these registration/orientation dates in order to play in the fall league.

Gorman's Lawrence commits to UNLV
Bishop Gorman High School's senior guard Marcus Lawrence orally committed to play for UNLV in 2006 according to a story in the Aug. 25 Las Vegas Review-Journal. The 6-foot Lawrence chose the Runnin' Rebels over Oregon State University, the University of Minnesota and San Diego State University, where Lawrence's former Gaels teammate Kashif Watson will attend this fall.
Bishop Gorman defeated Palo Verde to win the Class 4A championship earlier this year.
Henderson adult leagues forming
The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for its adult basketball leagues.
Registration is $300 per team for players 16 years of age and up and teams are required to provide their own reversible jerseys with numbers on the front and back. Teams may register in person daily at 9 a.m. at the department's sports office, located at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.
The program will feature two leagues, one playing on Monday and Wednesday nights and the second on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Downtown Recreation Center, 105 W. Basic Road. League play began Sept. 5.

Champs Youth taking hoops registration
Champs Youth Basketball is currently accepting registration for its fall basketball league.
The league is for boys and girls in grades 3-12. Champs has leagues on both sides of town for all levels and abilities. Prime Time leagues are for club teams and the more competitive players and Game Time leagues are for those seeking recreational competition.
All games are announced and MVPs and Champs of The Game are selected for every game.

McCullough named WBC ambassador
Summerlin resident and boxing star Wayne McCullough has been appointed World Ambassador for Peace and Goodwill in Sports by the World Boxing Council for its upcoming annual world convention to be held Oct. 2-8 in Gibraltar, Spain, where the organization will discuss a program of exemplary conduct with boxing and international sports.
In response to the press release sent out by the WBC, McCullough said, "For the first time in my life, I was knocked off my feet when I received the news from the WBC. I always wanted to be remembered not only for my boxing ability but also for my clean living, honesty, integrity and dedication to the sport. It is a privilege and an honor to be recognized by the WBC as the World Ambassador for Peace and Goodwill in Sports. This was totally unexpected and I have expressed my thanks to WBC President Jose Sulaiman for even thinking of me."
CHEERLEADING
Champs Youth seeking young cheerleaders
Champs Youth Basketball is looking for girls age 5-14 to be a part of Champs Cheerleaders. Participants will receive instruction in cheer, technique, dance, voice projection and precision while receiving cheer experience at games.
Cheerleaders will train at Boyack's Dance Attack, which has locations in Green Valley and the northwest.

CROSS COUNTRY
Coaches rank preseason top 10
Each week during the cross country season a panel of five area coaches will rank their top 10 boys and girls high school cross country teams. Nevada Track Stats (www.nvtrackstats.com) will publish the results of the vote weekly.
Silverado was the top-ranked boys team (49 points) with Shadow Ridge and Palo Verde tied for second place (45) in the preseason poll. Basic (35), Durango (31), Green Valley (25), Vo-Tech (15), Coronado, Foothill and Bonanza (12 each) rounded out the top 10 voting.
In the girls' rankings, Green Valley finished on top with 55 points, and was followed by Palo Verde (49), Centennial (43), Foothill (38), Shadow Ridge and Silverado (26 each), Cimarron-Memorial (24), Bishop Gorman and Basic (18 each) and Vo-Tech (11).
FISHING
Clunn to appear at Bass Pro Shops
Rick Clunn, recently voted the Greatest Angler of All Time in ESPN's Greatest Angler Debate, will be appearing to sign autographs and talk fishing at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, located at the Silverton, 8200 Industrial Road, from 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 17.
Clunn is a four-time CITGO Bassmaster Classic champion, a 29-time Classic qualifier and has 14 career B.A.S.S. wins to his name.

SNFPA set to hold 2nd annual tourney
The Southern Nevada Fire Prevention Association will hold its second annual golf tournament fundraiser on Oct. 1 at Silverstone Golf Club in Las Vegas. The tournament begins at 6 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast, followed by a shotgun start, commencing at 7 a.m. Lunch will be served thereafter with presentations being made to the winning foursome and individual contest winners.
The cost is $125 per golfer and includes continental breakfast, lunch, green fees, cart, range balls, contests, gifts and various prizes. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Fire and Life Safety programs for the community. Contribution opportunities such as sponsorship and raffle donations are available.

Futrell Financial planning tourney
Futrell Financial Management will be holding its first golf tournament on Sept. 21 at Silverstone Golf Course. The tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and will cost $150 per player or $500 per foursome.

Club seeking players 35 and up
Kilroy's Hockey Club, a club made up of players 35 years and older, plays every Monday night at 7:15 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. at the Fiesta's ice arena located at 2400 N. Rancho Drive. The club, which is hoping to increase awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a disease which took the life of one of the team's players, currently has four teams and is looking for qualified players to bring the total to six teams.

Ride for Kids set for Oct. 9
The inaugural Las Vegas Ride for Kids, a motorcycle road ride benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, will take place at 7 a.m. on Oct. 9. Registration is $35 per motorcycle and will be held at Freddie Spencer's Riding School, 7055 Speedway Blvd., Suite E-106 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The ride begins at 9 a.m., rain or shine, and will take riders through the scenic loop at Red Rock Canyon to the end point at Blue Diamond Park.

ROLLER HOCKEY
Ten-week season being offered
A 10-week roller hockey season for kids ages 5-14 will be offered this fall. The cost is $125 per child and includes one hour of practice time weekly, jerseys and trophies.
The league also is looking for middle and high school teams and coaches for the upcoming season and also offers adult leagues that play Sunday-Thursday nights.

SOFTBALL
Henderson fastpitch registration coming
Registration for the Henderson Girls Softball Association (HGSA) will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Line Drives Batting Cages, 1125 American Pacific Drive. Online registrations also will be accepted at www.hgsa-nv.com.
Player evaluations and tryouts will be held at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the 10- and 12-and-under divisions, and from 1-4 p.m. for the 14- and 18-and-under divisions.
The HGSA has been serving Clark County for more than 14 years and its registration is open to girls of all skill levels ages 5-18 residing in Clark County, including the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City. The registration fee is $100 for one child, $175 for two siblings and $250 for three siblings.
The registration fee includes uniforms, insurance and ASA registration. The schedule will include practice and 15 league games.
Las Vegas Blast holding tryouts
The Las Vegas Blast 12-and-under fastpitch softball team is holding open tryouts for girls competitive softball.

Midnight Madness tourney scheduled
The NASF will hold its Midnight Madness tournament on Saturday 10 in Mesquite.
There are men's and co-ed divisions, a four-game guarantee and a 60-minute time limit on all games. Games will start at 5 p.m.
The registration fee is $295 per team. A $3,000 Mizuno Award Package will be distributed among the top four teams. There also will be a home run hitting contest, which will cost $20 per person to enter. The winner will receive $500.

Sandpipers holding several tryouts
Sandpiper Swimming is looking for competitors ages 6-18 who to love to swim. The team practices at the Desert Breeze Aquatic Center on Spring Mountain and Durango and at the Palo Verde High School pool in Summerlin.
The Sandpipers feature nine different swim groups from beginners to nationally ranked swimmers. Sandpiper Swimming, formed in 1968, is the longest-running year-round swim team in Las Vegas.
Tryouts will be held at Desert Breeze Park at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 7, Sept. 12 and Sept. 14. The Sandpipers hold tryouts at the pool every Monday at 4 p.m. year-round.

NTA to hold classes at 12 locations
The Nevada Tennis Association will be conducting tennis classes for entry-level to intermediate players at 12 locations around the valley starting the week of Sept. 19. Classes will be offered for kids and adults and racquets and balls will be provided at no charge.

Fall season of Junior Team Tennis on tap
The fall season of Junior Team Tennis begins the week of Sept. 19 and teams are now forming at clubs and parks around the valley. Junior team Tennis is for kids ages 7-18 who want to experience league play in a fast, fun and friendly format.
Players of similar age and ability are matched together and play other local teams in their division.
Each team is comprised of two singles and one doubles match and half of a team's league matches are played at their home facility with the other half being played away.
Matches typically last 90 minutes and are held on Tuesday nights for the 14-and-under leagues and on Thursday nights for the 12-and-under leagues.
The 15-and-over league starts the first week of November and matches will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Walk 'n Roll for ALS set for Oct. 8
The annual Walk 'n Roll for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis will be held Oct. 8 at Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way. On-site registration begins at 10 a.m. followed by the walk. The event will feature a barbecue bash as well as a presentation of awards.
