BASEBALL

Junior Giants seek players, coaches

The Las Vegas Junior Giants are holding sign-ups until the beginning of June for players ages 4-14 and coaches.

Play begins in June and runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St.

High School scout team now forming

A scout team for various professional Major League Baseball organizations is looking for players.

Tryouts will be held on April 23 at Oxford Field, at Anasazi Road and Far Hills Drive in Summerlin. A previously scheduled April 16 date was changed due to the Easter holiday.

All players must report to the field no later than 9 a.m. Registration and tryouts will begin at 9:30 a.m.

All high school athletes born after July 31, 1988, are invited to attend. The tryout fee is $15. The scout team will attend the Memorial Day Tournament, which will be held May 27-29, as well as a June tournament. For more information, e-mail snvbaseball@hotmail.com.

BASKETBALL

Adult leagues set to get under way

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites basketball players ages 18 and older to participate in evening leagues that begin Monday and April 18 and continue through May 31.

Adults ages 40 and older will play from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays. Participants ages 18 and older will compete from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays.

The cost is $25 per person, plus officials' fees. Registration is open through Friday. Rubber-soled gym shoes are required; basketballs and goals will be provided.

Games will be played in the Brinley Middle School gym, 2480 Maverick St., and in the Gibson Middle School gym, 3900 W. Washington Ave.

Boys & Girls Clubs hold registrations

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas is holding registration for its spring basketball league for boys and girls in grades 6 through 12.

The sign-ups are taking place 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Donald W. Reynolds Unit in Green Valley, and the Lied Memorial Unit. Players in the recreational and advanced divisions can sign up.

The cost is $60 and includes an annual membership to the club, 10 regular-season games, a postseason tournament and a personal team T-shirt.

Regular season games for the Reynolds League began on March 27. All games and practices will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club, 2980 S. Robindale Road.

Regular season games for the Lied Memorial League began Monday, with all games and practices held at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell St. Volunteer coaches and scorekeepers also are needed.

New academy debuting at YMCA

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites youth ages 7 to 15 to learn everything from basketball fundamentals to advanced game execution from former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players.

Participants will have access to the YMCA's new computer learning center. Staff will offer homework assistance to help students maintain their grade point averages. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome.

New sessions begin on the first of each month. The program is held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $79 per month, per player. Participants receive $25 off the first month when they donate a new basketball to the academy.

TBA's league, Bitty Ball on tap

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 Rancho Drive, is taking registration for the Spring/Summer Recreational League at the Station's Sports Complex, directly behind the Palace Station at Interstate 15 and Sahara Avenue.

Individuals must register before April 19. Tuition for the eight-week Spring/Summer Session is $275. Registration includes: Player evaluation and team placement with a TBA-certified coach, eight one-hour basketball skill sessions, eight team practices, eight regulation games, two league parties, entry into the league championship playoffs, report card and diploma.

Bitty-Ball (grades K-2 ) registration is $215 and includes eight one-hour skill sessions, eight regulation games, two league parties, entry into the league championship playoffs, report card and diploma.

Teams also can register at the Station's Sports Complex between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners, and all referee/scorekeeper fees.

All games will be played on Friday evenings and Saturdays from May 6 to June 17 at the Station's Sports Complex. The number of teams is limited and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

TBA offers camps for youngsters

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is offering a year-round program open to all Track Breakers in grades 1-5.

The cost is $95 per week and the program runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday. The program includes an academic binder, T-shirt, snacks and lunch.

Breakers learn fundamentals and compete in sports games such as basketball, volleyball, soccer and more. Xbox and PlayStation tournaments are held daily. The learning center staff will academically challenge breakers with games and activities.

The Academy also will offer a weekly two-hour Sunday Skills Camp for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels.

The camp will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sundays at the Stations Sports Complex beginning on May 7. The cost is $15 per class.

CHEERLEADING

Teens shine at Silver State Spirits

Several local high schools won awards at the inaugural Silver State Spirit Championships held March 4 at Carson High School in Carson City.

Local Class 4A winners included Mojave (first place, hip-hop; second place, all-girls stunt); Sierra Vista (first, pom; second, hip-hop); Valley (second, pom); Spring Valley (first, coed); Foothill (first, jazz); and Cimarron-Memorial (second, jazz).

Class 3A winners from Southern Nevada included Faith Lutheran (first, pom); Boulder City (first, show; second, all-girl stunt); Pahrump Valley (first, hip-hop); Virgin Valley (second, show; second, hip-hop); and Moapa Valley (first, all-girl stunt).

The local Class 2A entry, The Meadows School, won the hip-hop, all-girl stunt and jazz categories. At Class 1A, Mountain View Christian School won the show category, with Lake Mead taking second place.

Cheer Nation set to host tryouts

CTK spring league forming

Christ the King, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, is holding registration for its spring dodgeball league for players who are of high school age and up.

The league begins play in the first week of May. The entry fee is $100 per team for returning teams, $120 for new teams, with a 10-player max for teams. The deadline for registrations is April 24. Teams can register at www.ctklv.org.

GOLF

Volunteers needed for Takefuji Classic

The LPGA Takefuji Classic is scheduled for today through Sunday at the Las Vegas Country Club, and tournament officials are still looking for volunteers for all positions.

Police-Firefighters Tournament on tap

The fourth annual Police versus Firefighters charity golf tournament will be held on May 25 at the Highland Falls Golf Club, 10201 Sun City Blvd. Check-in is at 7 a.m., with tee off following at 8 a.m. The cost is $120 per player or $480 per foursome.

There will be hole-in-one prizes, a longest drive and closest to the pin contest and raffles. The entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch, and a tournament hat. HOCKEY

Rebels fall in semifinals

The AA Las Vegas Midget Rebels went 3-2 at the USA Hockey National Championships held March 29-April 1 at the Castle Shannon Ice Castle in Pittsburgh, losing to the Butler Valley (Md.) Dawgs, 3-2, on a goal with three seconds left in regulation in the 18 & Under Tier II semifinals, April 1.

The Rebels, coached by Rob Pallin, won their opener against the Hyland Hills (Colo.) Jaguars, 7-6, on March 29, defeated the host Pittsburgh Predators, 4-2, on March 30, and lost to the Bud Bakewell Bruins (NY), 5-2, on March 31 in National Conference NHL Division pool play.

Las Vegas iced the New Jersey Devils, 6-5, in overtime in the quarterfinals on April 1 before losing in the semis later in the day.

The Midget Rebels were led in scoring in the tournament by Chris Francis, who had 13 points (seven goals, six assists), Ryan King, who had seven points (two goals, five assists), and Nick Jackson, who had five points (one goal, four assists).

ROLLER HOCKEY

New season set to begin on April 29

Las Vegas Roller Hockey will be holding a 10-week season that begins play on April 29. The league is for children ages 5-14 and costs $125. Players get one hour of practice time weekly, along with jerseys and trophies.

The league is looking for middle and high school teams and coaches for the upcoming season, which begins in the fall.

A competitive under-11 girls soccer team has a few openings.

SWIMMING

Swimming class for babies set to start

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites parents with babies between ages 6 and 36 months to sign up for water babies classes.

Babies are introduced to the water, water safety and basic skills with a parent present. Babies can complete equivalent skill competency to progress to the next level.

Classes are available from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, and 9:30 to 10 a.m., 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. and 11 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays.

A seven-week spring session begins the week of April 24. The cost is $45 for members and $95 for non-members.

NTA schedules several classes

The Nevada Tennis Association will start conducting classes for juniors and adults at various locations during the week of April 24.

The classes are for entry level to intermediate players ages 5 and up. The fee is $50 per person for the six-week session.

Classes will focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.

TRACK & FIELD

LV Neon Invite meet set for April 22-23

Youth from across the nation are expected to join young local athletes in the Las Vegas Neon Invitational outdoor track meet April 22-23 at Clark High School, 4291 Pennwood Ave.

Boys and girls ages 5 to 18 may enter track events, high jump, mini-javelin, long jump, shot put, discus, triple jump and pole vault events. The meet also will offer wheelchair events, which will include shot put, javelin, and 60-, 100- and 200-meter races.

Participants must be members of USATF or Wheelchair Sports USA, and will compete within their two-year age division. Events will begin at 9 a.m. each day. First- through sixth-place winners will receive awards.

Entry fees are $3 per event and $12 per relay if received by Saturday. After Saturday, fees will be $5 per event and $20 per relay. Fees, payable by money order, certified check or team check, must accompany entry forms. Late entries on meet day will be accepted between 7 and 9:30 a.m. only at Clark High School.

The event, co-hosted by the Nevada Association of the United States of America Track & Field and the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, is expected to be sanctioned by the USATF.
