Narayan Pathi, a 15-year-old Bishop Gorman High School freshman, won a gold medal at the United States Fencing Association North American Cup fencing tournament in Reno, March 13-20.

Narayan competed among a field of almost 90 fencers from across the country and Canada in Division III Men's Epee. As a result, he earned his USFA C-06 rating, a jump from his previous rating of E-06.

He was a Nevada qualifier for the USFA Junior Olympics held in Hartford, Conn., in February.

He fences under the direction of fencing master Yves Auriol at the Fencing Academy of Nevada.

Narayan is an honor student and a member of the Bishop Gorman Academic Society. He is the son of Kathleen Pathi and the late Dr. Talkad L. Pathi of Las Vegas.

Korey Lopez, a student at Clark High School, completed a project necessary to become an Eagle Scout, while at the same time helping orphans in another country.

Korey recently organized several clothing drives on Nellis Air Force Base and in local neighborhoods, and shipped 200 pounds of clothing to an orphanage in the South American country of Guyana. After sorting out clothes that would be useful to the orphans, he took the remainder of the clothing, which filled an SUV, to Safe Nest in Las Vegas.

The Red Horse squadron from Nellis AFB helped Korey out by delivering the clothing to the orphanage.
