BASEBALL

Muir tabbed MWC's Pitcher of Week

Cimarron-Memorial High School graduate Jordan Muir, now a freshman at Brigham Young University, was named the Mountain West Conference's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 10.

Muir, a right-hander, came in for relief duty in two games for the Cougars and ended up winning both games. Muir threw against UNLV with his team trailing 5-2 and held the Rebels scoreless as BYU rallied to win the game.

Muir allowed just four hits and no runs on the week while striking out seven and walking none in 10.2 innings of work.

Silverado moving up top 25 list

Silverado High School's baseball team moved up to the No. 9 spot in the nation by the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in its April 17 Top 25 poll.

The Skyhawks, ranked No. 1 in Southern Nevada by the Las Vegas Review-Journal in its weekly polls, moved up from the No. 14 spot on April 3 after being ranked No. 35 in the nation by Baseball America in its preseason poll, the only team from Nevada to make the list. Silverado, coached by Brian Whitaker, was 18-1-1 at press time.

Junior Giants seek players, coaches

The Las Vegas Junior Giants are holding sign-ups until the beginning of June for players ages 4-14 and coaches.

Season play begins in June and runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 North J St.

BASKETBALL

Centennial's Lucas named All-American

Centennial High School's Italee Lucas was recently named to the Parade All-America High School Girls Basketball team.

The 5-foot-8 junior who led her team to state championships in 2004 and 2005 averaged 22.8 points, 8.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 4.6 steals per game last season and was also named Nevada's Class 4A Player of the Year by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Gorman girls squad ranked No. 17

The Bishop Gorman High School girls basketball team finished the season ranked No. 17 in the final rankings by the USA Today in its Super 25 girls basketball rankings, the Gaels' highest ranking in the poll of the season.

Gorman went 31-1 in capturing its first girls state championship, defeating opponents by an average of 33 points per game under the direction of head coach Sheryl Krmpotich.

Church to offer summer camp

Christ the King, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, is offering a summer basketball camp June 26-28 for girls in grades 4-9, run by Durango High School girls varsity coach John Bartleson. The cost per camper is $85 before May 19 and $100 after that date.

New academy debuting at YMCA

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites youths ages 7-15 to learn everything from basketball fundamentals to advanced game execution from former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players. Participants will have access to the YMCA's new computer learning center and staff will offer homework assistance to students. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome.

New sessions begin on the first of each month. The program is held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $79 per month, per player. YMCA spring leagues forming

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites boys and girls basketball teams of all skill levels in grades 3-12 to compete in a spring league from May 6 through July 8.

Games are played Saturdays. Team registration is ongoing through Monday at the YMCA. The team cost is $310 plus a $20 referee fee per team, per game. Winners of grade 3-8 divisions will play in Main Event Tournament or Las Vegas Showcase pending eight-team minimum per division.

TBA offers camps for youngsters

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is offering a year-round program open to all track breakers in grades 1-5. The cost is $95 per week and the program runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program includes an academic binder, T-shirt, snacks and lunch.

Participants will learn fundamentals and compete in sports and games such as basketball, volleyball, soccer and more. Xbox and PlayStation tournaments are held daily.

The academy also is offering a recreational basketball league. Interested parties should register at the TBA between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners and all referee/scorekeeper fees.

All games will be played at the Station's Sports Complex on Friday evenings and Saturdays starting May 6 and ending June 17. The number of teams are limited and spots are filled on a first come, first served basis.

The Academy also will offer a weekly two-hour Sunday Skills Camp for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels. The camp will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sundays at the Stations Sports Complex beginning on May 7. The cost is $15 per class.

BOXING

UNLV wins national title

The UNLV boxing club won its first national championship, edging out Air Force and Army by one point at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Championships in Reno on April 8.

The Rebels had two individual champions in sophomores Greg Murrell (156 pounds) and Henry Namauu (195) and three second-place finishers in freshman Jason Morris (112), junior Jeff Watkins (147) and sophomore Jason Crocco (185).

CHEERLEADING

Cheer Nation set to host tryouts

Cheer Nation is hosting tryouts for its 2006-07 season from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today and Wednesday for girls and boys ages 5-17, and 18 and older for the open team.

Cheerleading signups extended to May 1

The YMCA Youth Cheerleading Academy is open to youth ages 7-15. Participants learn stunts, tumbling and dance routines performed during Saturday basketball games.

Open enrollment runs through Monday with the first game set for May 6. Cheer shirt and shorts included. Volunteer coaches also are needed.

FENCING

FAN sweeps Nevada State Championships

The Fencing Academy of Nevada (FAN) swept the Nevada State Championships with 14 competitors capturing nine of 12 gold medal first-place finishes and emerging as the winningest fencing club in the state. The tournament, also a qualifying event to the summer national championships, was held in Reno on April 1-2.

Champions in individual events were Susan Jennings, FAN coach, in women's foil; Nelson Granda of Bonanza High School in men's sabre; Nik-Nik Ameli of The Meadows School in women's epee; and Evan Ranes in men's epee.

Ameli, 12, won the title at the senior-level tournament and is one of the youngest Nevada state champions ever.

Ranes faced off against his clubmate, Kian Ameli, for the Men's Epee Championship, earning a USFA rating of A-06.

The FAN enjoyed equal success in the team events winning five of the six team championships. The women of FAN retained their titles from last year in women's epee, women's foil and women's sabre, while the men won the 2006 team championships in men's epee and men's foil. The men's saber team lost a tight finals bout to the Reno Silver Blades.

Fencers that contributed to the Fencing Academy of Nevada team championships were Nik-Nik Ameli, Dakota Root and Cynthia Ameli (Women's Epee team), Susan Jennings, Nik-Nik Ameli and Dakota Root (Women's Foil team), Susan Jennings, Dakota Root and Nik-Nik Ameli (Women's Sabre team), Eli Delgado, Evan Ranes and Kian Ameli (Men's Epee team), Evan Ranes, Eli Delgado and Sean Ameli (Men's Foil team) and Mark Kovacs, Nelson Granda and Ashok Pathi (Men's Sabre team).

Other medalists at the Nevada State Championships were Eli Delgado, second-place silver; Sean Ameli, third-place in Men's Foil; Cynthia Ameli, second-place silver; Dakota Root, third place in Women's Epee; Nik-Nik Ameli, third place in Women's Foil; Kian Ameli, second-place silver; and Narayan Pathi, third place in Men's Epee.

YMCA offers Nia Technique classes

Nia Technique classes are held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane. In addition, classes are held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. on Saturdays at the Durango Hills Community Center, 3521 N. Durango Drive.

The YMCA is the only organization in Las Vegas to offer these classes, which are led by Stacey Hall, a certified blue-belt Nia instructor.

Western's Sample Division I-AA-bound

Western High School quarterback Julian Sample has signed a letter of intent to play for Division I-AA's Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tenn.

Sample led the Warriors in passing (1,162 yards, 18 TDs) and rushing (766 yards, 15 TDs) in his senior season.

GOLF

Poverello House event to benefit homeless

The second annual Poverello House Golf Scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on May 3 at Silverstone Golf Course, 8600 Cupp Drive. The fundraising event will benefit Poverello House homes, which provide a place where homeless men can take shelter during the day and get two hot meals.

Players will also have the opportunity to participate in a raffle auction, a reverse drive hole and one club hole and putting, long drive and accuracy contests. More than a dozen prizes will be given away, including an Audi from Desert Audi and a Volkswagen from Desert Volkswagen.

Police-firefighters tournament on tap

The fourth annual Police vs. Firefighters charity golf tournament will be held May 25 at the Highland Falls Golf Club, 10201 Sun City Blvd.

Check-in is at 7 a.m., with tee off following at 8 a.m. The cost is $120 per player or $480 per foursome. There will be hole-in-one prizes, a longest drive and closest to the pin contest, a raffle and other awards. The entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a tournament hat.

Registration will be held the day of the event. All proceeds will benefit the Southern Nevada Police Athletic League and the UMC Burn Center.

Alzheimer's tourney teeing off June 3

The second annual Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 3 at the Aliante Golf Club, 3100 W. Elkhorn Drive North. The cost is $75 per person and includes greens fees, cart, range balls and lunch. There will be raffle prizes, a putting contest, a closest-to-the-pin contest, a longest drive contest and a giant team skins game.

The tourney begins at 7 a.m. with check-in beginning at 5:30 a.m. The tournament will be have a shotgun start and will be played in the four-person scramble format.

Signups begin at Durango Hills YMCA

Youth ages 3-12 are invited to tumble into the joys of gymnastics and begin learning routines at the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive. A new session will run from May 2 to June 6.

Participants ages 3-5 will meet Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. or Saturdays from noon to 1 p.m. Gymnastics I will be held Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 6 and 7, and from 6 to 7 p.m. for ages 8-12. Gymnastics II will meet on Saturdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for ages 6 and 7, and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 8-12. The cost is $55 for ages 3-5 and $75 for ages 6-12.

New season to begin Saturday

Las Vegas Roller Hockey (LVRH) will be holding a 10-week season that begins play on Saturday. The league is for children ages 5-14 and costs $125. Players get one-hour of practice time weekly, along with jerseys and trophies.

The league also is seeking middle and high school teams as well as coaches for the upcoming season, which begins in the fall. LVRH also has an adult league that plays Sunday through Thursday nights, with all levels of play, from beginner to advanced.

NTA schedules several classes

The Nevada Tennis Association will start conducting classes for juniors and adults at various locations this week. The classes are for entry level to intermediate players ages 5 and up. The fee is $50 per person for the six-week session.

Classes will focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.
