Are you in? Shopping clubs offer perks

Most of us probably don't really need to shop any more than we already do, right? Nor do we really need to be anymore dialed in to major malls other than knowing where they're located, and where the good parking is, right?

Right.

Which is why I'm intrigued by The Club, an e-mail program with more than 100,000 local members, which exists to give members the inside track on local shopping at the Fashion Show, Meadows and Boulevard malls.

Joining The Club is free, and can be done online at thefashionshow.com, meadowsmall.com or boulevardmall.com, or in person at the concierge/customer service centers of each mall.

Members receive notification of sales, special event information, fashion trends and forecasts, coupon offers, special offers and promotions from retailers at the three malls and new product announcements. Members also are automatically entered to win a $100 gift card each month from General Growth Properties, the company that owns and operates the three malls.

While I may not necessarily need all that extra information, it might be nice to have it waiting in my e-mail inbox for those times when some heavy duty shopping is in order.

Looking to shop for tasty organic food, learn a little about how it's cultivated and feel good about supporting organic farmers all at once? On Aug. 16, Whole Foods Market's two Las Vegas Valley locations -- near Boca Park at 8855 W. Charleston Blvd. and at The District at Green Valley Ranch, 100 S. Green Valley Parkway -- will donate 5 percent of the day's net sales to the Organic Farming Research Foundation.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the improvement and adoption of organic farming systems. The group sponsors research pertaining to organic farming, then passes that information along to farmers and the public in order to educate more people about organic farming practices.

Both stores are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Not feeling VIP enough during those marathon shopping excursions? The recently introduced Chai Connections membership card from United Jewish Community/Jewish Federation of Las Vegas offers saving and instant VIP treatment at a variety of stores and restaurants in the valley. Listings and merchant profiles are available online at jewishlasvegas.com.

Chai Connections memberships are $18. For more information, call the United Jewish Community/Jewish Federation of Las Vegas at 732-0556.

Becoming a Chai Connections merchant also carries a fee of $18. For more information about becoming a merchant, call 498-9809 or e-mail Barbara Kenig at barbarakenig@aol.com.

And finally, if FAO Schwarz's bright pink Barbie collection doesn't make you feel like spending money, maybe the Blue Man Group's vivid hue will.

The group recently launched a line of musical instrument toys, which will be available exclusively at FAO Schwarz through mid-August. After that, you'll be able to find them everywhere. The line includes the Keyboard Experience and the Percussion Tubes. The toys include pre-programmed songs, iPod or MP3 player compatibility, interchangeable instrument sounds and original Blue Man Group music, and retail for $69.99 to $99.99.

Unfortunately, the kit doesn't include blue paint, so for a truly authentic experience, you're going to have to make a stop at the hardware store, too.
