STATION CASINOS' 30TH ANNIVERSARY : Humble beginnings
Employees fondly recall early days of locals' destination

It's hard to believe the company behind the plush Red Rock Resort had its roots in a smoky little 5,000-square-foot casino few people can name. That was how Station Casinos began 30 years ago, with one property called, simply, The Casino.

The property went through a couple name changes (remember the Bingo Palace, anyone?) and now the expanded Palace Station is located where that little, 100-slot machine business once stood. It is only one of Station's nine major casino properties. The others are Boulder Station, Texas Station, Sunset Station, Santa Fe Station, Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock, Fiesta Rancho and Fiesta Henderson. Station also is involved in a handful of smaller properties.

ONE FOR THE SILVER STATE: Winning farewell
Team strikes victory at Kava Bowl in last hurrah before college

It was the first time a team of graduated high school seniors from Nevada participated in an All-Star football game out of state, and the boys from the Silver State certainly did a nice job representing their home in the 2006 Kava Bowl tournament -- held June 22-24 at Copper Hills High School in West Jordan, Utah -- winning both games and claiming the title of Kava Bowl champions.

Organized and coached by Bishop Gorman High School head coach David White, with help from Las Vegas Gladiators general manager Dan Dolby, the team used the game as an opportunity to play together in two final games before beginning their college careers as well as get some exposure to college recruiters.
