BASKETBALL

Adult men's open play announced

Men's adult basketball open play is held from 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Community gymnasium, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive. Cost is $2 per person.

YMCA holds youth basketball sign-ups

The YMCA Youth Basketball League is forming for youths ages 6-15 at the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive.

The next session runs from Sept. 11 through Oct. 28. Games are held Friday evenings or Saturdays. The fee is $85 plus uniform cost.

BEGINNER

YMCA holds junior sports academy

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites youths ages 3-5 to sign up for a beginner sports program which includes two weeks each of soccer, tee-ball and basketball.

The program will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 9 through Oct. 7. Cost is $55-$65. Call 877-9622 for more information.

OUTREACH

BlazeSports offers sports for disabled

BlazeSports Las Vegas, a program of the United States Disabled Athletes Fund locally funded and facilitated by the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services Adaptive Recreation Division, is offering educational sports sessions for children ages 7 and older and adults with physical disabilities who are interested in participating in wheelchair tennis, wheelchair football, swimming, quad rugby, golf, and track and field.

The sessions are held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at 6438 Celeste Ave. The next session begins Sept. 6.

FENCING

Local academy offers year-round class

The Olympic sport of fencing is taught at the Fencing Academy of Nevada, 1400 N. Rampart Blvd. Beginning classes are forming for all ages.

The Academy offers group and private instruction in all three weapons, foil, epee and sabre, as well as intermediate classes and open fencing time for all Las Vegas fencers.

Local plays well at USTA nationals

Summerlin resident Cristala Andrews won four matches in girls' 18 singles play at the USTA National Championships held Aug. 6-13 in San Jose, Calif.

Andrews defeated Aeriel Ellis of Hayward, Calif., in her opening match (6-2, 6-3), beat Veronica Li of Irvine, Calif., in her round of 128 match (7-6, 6-2), ousted Lauren Megale of Boise, Idaho in her third match (6-4, 2-6, 6-3), defeated Claire Bartlett of Chattanooga, Tenn., in her round of 32 match (6-1, 6-3), and then lost to No. 5 seed Lindsey Albanese in the round of 16 (3-6, 2-6).
