BASKETBALL

MLK tournament set for January

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites competitive youth basketball teams across Clark County to compete in the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament Jan. 12-15. Games will be offered for open division elementary grades 2-3 and 4-5. Middle school grades 6-8 will have games in separate divisions for boys and girls.

Cost is $200 per team of five or more players, including officials' fees. Matching team jerseys are required. All teams are guaranteed three games. Registration is open through Dec. 30.

Itty Bitty signups open at YMCA

The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, will hold Itty Bitty Basketball for boys and girls ages 3-5 from Jan. 5 to Feb. 9. The program will be held Fridays from 5 to 5:45 p.m.

Basketball Academy offers youth training

Youth ages 7-17 are invited to participate in the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA's Basketball Academy of Sports & Academics.

Top-notch facilities and expert teachers help competitive players master advanced game execution and technique. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome.

The program is held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane. Cost is $82 per month.

Boys and girls camps planned

The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, will hold holiday basketball camps for boys and girls ages 6-12, Wednesday through Friday and Dec. 27-29. Camps will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Campers will learn basketball fundamentals and good sportsmanship. The cost is $45. For more information, call 240-9622.

City seeks teams for leagues

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites adults age 40 and older to participate in winter basketball leagues from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursdays beginning Jan. 11 at the Dula Gymnasium, 441 E. Bonanza Road. The fee is $225, plus $25 for officials' fees, per team. Members must sign up as a team. A minimum of four teams with five to 12 players each is needed for the league to proceed. Boys and girls ages 3-14 also are invited to participate in winter Saturday leagues beginning Jan. 9 at Brinley Community School, 6150 Smoke Ranch Road. The weekly leagues continue for eight weeks. Cost is $35 for ages 3-4, $45 for ages 5-6 and $65 for ages 7-14. Registration remains open until leagues are full, and volunteer coaches are needed. For more information, call 229-2642.

Herbst setting more SCORE records

Las Vegan Troy Herbst has solidified his position as the most prolific racer in SCORE desert racing history by claiming a record seventh unlimited Class 1 and a record fourth SCORE Overall point championship, after winning Class 1 for a record third straight year in the recent Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. At age 40, the youngest of the three Herbst brothers was officially crowned as the 2006 SCORE Desert Series Class 1 and Overall point champion at the annual SCORE Awards Night event at the Primm Valley Resort on Dec. 9.

In other SCORE news, seventeen racers earned the 2006 SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards by surviving the Tecate Baja 100. They are: B.J. Baldwin, Bob Shepard, Alan Pflueger, Gary Weyrich, Brian Parkhouse, Martin Christensen, Richard Boyle, Brian Burgess, Sammy Ehrenberg, Daniel McMillin, Arturo Velazco, Donald Moss, John Cooley, Tim Noe, Stan Potter, Gus Vildosola Jr. and Jason Voss.

Signups open for kids' indoor play

Boys and girls ages 3-5 and their parents are invited to sign up for Itty Bitty Indoor Soccer at the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive. The program will be held Tuesdays from 5 to 5:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 2.

YMCA to host Hawaii coaches for camp

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites players ages 10-18 to learn how to volley, bump and serve from some of Hawaii's best coaches. Teamwork, respect and Hawaiian culture will be incorporated into the program, which will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
