BASEBALL

PUMA holding open tryouts

PUMA national tryouts, powered by the Baseball Factory and Team One, will take place in Las Vegas on Feb. 19 at UNLV's Earl A. Wilson Stadium. High school athletes ages 13-18 are encouraged to attend. Players are asked to report to the field at noon for registration. Tryouts will begin at 1 p.m. The registration fee is $40.

Top players from the tryout may be selected for the USA Junior Olympic Tournament, Dodgertown World Series or the Cape Cod Weekly Training Camp.

Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball's staff of professional scouts, former professional players and former college coaches will evaluate players on the field and lead a college recruiting question-and-answer session. Those in attendance will learn about the college recruiting process and the steps players should take in order to increase their chances of playing college baseball and receiving scholarships.

Liberty holding mini training camp

The coaches from Liberty High School's baseball team will be holding a mini spring training camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Liberty High School, 3700 Liberty Heights Ave.

Liberty head coach Buck Thomas, a scout for the Houston Astros, assistant coaches Jason Pimental and Kris Jensen, Justin Leone (Padres AAA) and Jon Slack (Mets AA) will on hand to lend their expertise.

The cost of the two-day camp is $50. Parents interested in getting their players an additional hour of training from 8-9 a.m. in either hitting, fielding or pitching can arrange to do so for an extra $25.

Las Vegas Warriors holding tryouts

The Las Vegas Warriors are recruiting 9-year-old baseball players for competitive tournament play locally, as well as some traveling. The Warriors are a Little League-friendly club.

Las Vegas Hawks hunting for players

The Las Vegas Hawks 11-and-under baseball team is looking for 10- and 11-year-old experienced club players to fill a few roster spots.

BASKETBALL

TBA holding spring sign-ups

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is now taking registration for its Spring Recreational League at the Station Sports Complex, 2730 Rancho Road.

Individuals must register before Wednesday. Tuition for the Academy's nine-week fall session is $275, due at time of registration. Academy registration includes: player evaluation and team placement with a TBA certified coach, eight one-hour basketball skill sessions, eight team practices, eight regulation games, two league parties, entry into league championship playoffs, an academy report card and diploma. Bitty-Ball (kindergarten through second grade) registration is $215 and includes the same features.

Teams wanting to join TBA's recreational league also can register at the Station Sports Complex between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners, and all referee/scorekeeper fees.

All games will be played at the complex on Friday evenings and Saturdays. The season runs until April 1. The number of teams are limited and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Adult leagues opening at center

Adult basketball teams are invited to register and participate in two evening recreational leagues that begin Feb. 27 at West Community Center, 2050 Sapphire Stone Ave. inside West Middle School.

The 30-and-over league will play Monday nights, while the C division league for ages 18 and older will play Wednesdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Both basketball leagues will feature an eight-game schedule followed by a single-elimination tournament.

The cost to participate is $225 per team of five or more players, plus $25 per team for officials fees. Registration will be open until filled or Feb. 17. Game times will be at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Basketballs will be supplied.

The leagues are sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services. For more information or to register, call 229-5080.

Local prep teams ranked nationally

Palo Verde High School's boys basketball team, 22-1 as of press time, was ranked No. 4 in the Southwest and No. 22 in the nation by the National Prep Poll put out by Associated Press on Jan. 23. The Panthers, 74-15 over the last three seasons, moved down from No. 22 in the national rankings and up from the No. 6 spot in the regional poll.

The Bishop Gorman girls' basketball team, 19-1 as of press time, was ranked No. 9 in the West by USA Today in its Jan. 24 rankings, up from the No. 10 spot.

Maxpreps.com offers state ranking

MaxPreps.com offers a state ranking of all high schools in all classes on its Web site. These were the top 20 teams, in order, from its Jan. 23 poll: Palo Verde, Bishop Gorman, Rancho, Foothill, Reno, Galena, Durango, Centennial, Mojave, Silverado, Hug, Valley, Bonanza, Cheyenne, Canyon Springs, Eldorado, Cimarron-Memorial, Faith Lutheran (3A), Green Valley and Shadow Ridge.

The site also offers national rankings. The top 5 schools in the nation in its Jan. 23 poll were Lawrence North (Indianapolis); North College Hill (Cincinnati); Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA); Artesia (Lakewood, Calif.); and St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.).

CHEERLEADING

YMCA taking youth hoops cheer sign-ups

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting sign-ups for Youth Basketball League Cheerleading.

Participants will learn cheer/dance routines and perform during Saturday Youth Basketball League games. The program, open to youth age 10 and under, will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Tuesdays through March 11. The cost is $55 for members, $65 for nonmembers. Uniforms are included. Volunteer coaches are needed.

YMCA offering lessons for kids

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is now accepting sign-ups for Total Golf Adventure, a program that teaches youth participants golf fundamentals.

The program is designed to develop confidence, motor skills, muscle groups, good sportsmanship and a high level of concentration. Total Golf Adventure will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays through March 21. The cost is $135.

HOCKEY

Local tries out for Junior World Team

Cimarron-Memorial High School senior Brandon Baumeister tried out for the Junior World Team inline hockey team at Paris Las Vegas last month.

Baumeister, the only local chosen to participate in the tryout, was one of eight goaltenders trying out for the team but failed to make the Junior World Team or the Under 18 Major Team roster.

MARTIAL ARTS

Itty Bitty tae kwon do class at YMCA

The Durango Hills Community Center, 3521 N. Durango Drive, offers Itty Bitty tae kwon do classes for youth between ages 4-6.

Classes are held from 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $49. Sign up for classes by the first of each month.

A Kung Fu tournament team is now being formed for adults, teens and children. Classes start on Feb. 18.

RUNNING

Rock the Ranch ready to run again

The annual Rock the Ranch Fun Run will take place at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The 1- and 3-mile races will travel over portions of the scenic Spring Mountain Ranch State Park and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Proceeds will benefit the Andre Agassi Boys & Girls Club. All participants will have the opportunity to win prizes, including a trip to Disneyland.

SOFTBALL

Summerlin Recreation holding registration

Summerlin Recreation is currently registering individual players as well as teams for its men's winter softball league.

The league starts Sunday and will play games each Sunday at the Willows Park, 2875 Desert Marigold Lane, until March 26.

League now seeking umpires

The Northwest Girls Softball Fastpitch League is looking for a few good men and women age 16 years and older to officiate girls softball.

Some knowledge of softball and baseball is required. Umpires will receive $25 for each game which will be played Mondays through Saturdays.

League adding late sign-up date

Rainbow Youth Soccer League will be holding a late sign-up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at 702 Soccer, 3385 S. Durango Drive. The registration fee for players ages 3 1/2-14 is $85 and includes jerseys and pictures. RYSL is a coed recreational league which has played at Desert Breeze Park for the last eight years.

Free tennis clinics to be offered

The David Pate Junior Tennis Foundation is sponsoring a free tennis clinic for beginner and novice players ages 7-14.
