Local Thespian Terry Lynn Pershing will debut her show "Music of My Life" at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Starbright Theatre in Sun City Summerlin.
Tickets cost $11 for residents and $13 for non-residents, and can be obtained by calling the box office at 240-1333. They also can be purchased at the Desert Vista, Mountain Shadows and Pinnacle community centers. The venue is located at 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd.
Pershing's show, which she plans to tour, will be directed by her and is based on her experiences.The one-woman show will feature a four-piece band and will include two guests, along with music from the 1940s through the 1980s.
"Music of My Life" was co-written by Pershing, who has been a professional entertainer for 25 years.
Play set amid Cold War era
Stage Door Entertainment will bring the hit musical "Chess" to town beginning with today's preview performance at 7:30 p.m. inside the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center, 1771 Inner Circle Drive.
The show runs through Feb. 5, with performances set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The theater is dark on Jan. 29.

"Chess" is the story of a love triangle told against the backdrop of an international chess tournament during the height of the Cold War. The show features hits such as "One Night in Bangkok" and "I Know Him So Well."
Featured in the cast are Robin Berry as Florence, Jared Dalley as Anatoly, Jay Joseph as Freddie, John Wennstrom as Molokov, Daniel Trippett as Walter, Kelli Oster as Svetlana, and Jason Andino as the Arbiter.
Ensemble brings sounds of Dixieland jazz to life
The sounds of Dixieland jazz are revived at the East Lounge inside the Gold Coast.
The Royal Dixie Jazz Band performs sets from 1 to 6:40 p.m. on Fridays at the venue, capping its schedule of afternoon performances on weekdays.

Local children challenged to pen an essay
Today is the deadline for area elementary school students to submit their essays describing their special dream.
Entries for the What Is Your Dream essay contest are due at 5 p.m. The prize is a $50 gift certificate.
The competition is part of the City of Las Vegas' celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Peace Week, which began Sunday and ends Saturday, and Black History Month, which is observed in February.

Children's musical to spin tale
PBS television's top-rated children's program "Dragon Tales" is coming to Las Vegas.
Tickets for the show, titled "Missing Music Mystery," will go on sale Monday for seven performances at the Thomas & Mack Center, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.
Shows are scheduled for 7 p.m. March 2; 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. March 3; 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. March 4; and 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. March 5.
Tickets cost $14 and $18 apiece. A limited number of $24 premium seats also are available. On opening night, all seats excluding premium are $13. A $2 parking fee will be added to all ticket prices.
