Madlock to host batting camp

Four-time National League batting champion Bill Madlock will host a hitting camp from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 8 and 9 at Giambi's Hitman Baseball Academy, 1051 Mary Crest Road, Suite J. The cost of the camp is $90.

BASKETBALL

Free Hoops for Hope program to tip off

Top college basketball players will teach game fundamentals to boys and girls ages 11-14 who enroll in a free Hoops for Hope camp, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 J. St.

Attendees will be coached by Division I basketball players from the universities of Southern Utah, Tennessee, Pepperdine, Coastal Carolina, Washington and San Diego State, as well as by former UNLV players.

Parents of camp participants are invited to a free workshop on Friday to learn ways to enhance youth nutrition and activities and how to prepare for college basketball recruiters and other college opportunities.

FOOTBALL

NYFL seeks players for tackle teams

The Nevada Youth Football League is holding registration for full contact football for the fall season.

Registration can be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the league office at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive. When signing up, each participant must have either a player ID card from the NYFL or an original birth certificate and utility bill.

For the Youth Division, ages 6 to 14, registration costs $180, with payment due in cash or money order only. Players must be present for weigh-in and accompanied by a parent.

Practice starts the first week in August, with games running from September to mid-November.

GOLF

Ladies Golf Clinics planned for August

LPGA teaching professional Kristin Sunderhaft will conduct Ladies Golf Clinics in August, covering all areas of the game for all skill levels, at the Callaway Golf Center, 6730 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Session I will begin July 31 and run every Monday through Aug. 21. Session II begins Aug. 5 and runs every Saturday through Aug. 26. Both sessions will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. The cost is $160 per student and space is limited.

Vegas Lights teams place second at state

The Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association's Southeast Vegas Lights tournament teams all took second place in the recent Nevada State Tournament.

The Vegas Lights 12-and-under "B" team placed second and qualified for the national tournament in Midland, Texas, set for the first week of August. The team is coached by Chris Chapman and includes Johanna Benton, Karlie Camardella, Diana Cassaro, Natasha Chapman, Lee Harrison, Alyssa Mendoza, Megan Patras, Briona Santovito, Lindsay Seberry, Aricia Dami, Daira Eamon, Alex Battest and Desmond Sanchez.

Vegas Lights' 12-and-under "C" team placed second and qualified for the regionals in San Diego, while the 10-and-under "B" team finished second at state and qualified for the regional tournament in Atwater, Calif.

The team is coached by Greg Caruso and includes Natalie Graves, Gabriella Chapman, Khrystyna Chapman, Rianna Splinter, Brandi Splinter, Gabrielle Santiago, Karly Severance, Ashley Tarbet, Madisen Vrabel, Megan Zingo and Taeja Gomez.

Fastpitch league sets fall sign-ups

The Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association's Southeast league will be holding sign-ups for its fall season over the next month.

Registration will be held at 8 p.m. on July 25 and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 5 at Round Table Pizza, 8878 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 104. Registration also will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Vito's Italian Eatery, 10345 S. Eastern Ave.

SNFA Southeast will hold its league draft from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 19 at Desert Bloom Park, 8405 S. Maryland Parkway. Anyone signing up that day will be charged a $10 late fee.

Tryouts for players ages 14 and under will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.; players ages 12 and under can try out from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and players ages 10 and under can try out from 1 to 3 p.m.

Registrations fees are based on the division played, not the player's age. The 8-and-under division fee is $65, while the 10-, 12- and 14-and-under divisions cost $90.

There is a $5 sibling family discount. Players should bring a copy of their birth certificates for league files if they haven't played in SNFA Southeast before.

TAEKWONDO

Locals compete at Junior Olympics

Team Nevada Taekwondo sent 17 youngsters to the 2006 USA Taekwondo Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships held July 6-9 in Atlanta.

Team Nevada Taekwondo athletes who received checks for $216 from the League Athlete Support Fund are Micah Alba, Mesquite Taekwondo Center; Zack Alba, Mesquite Taekwondo Center; Niel Anderson, Clark County Taekwondo Club; Brianna Bordon, Elite Taekwondo; and Cynthia Neudeck, Academy of Taekwondo.

Other Nevada Youth Olympic Taekwondo League athletes who competed in Atlanta were Devin Neudeck, Academy of Taekwondo; Rommel Viray, Academy of Taekwondo; Chloe Acosta, Elite Taekwondo; Keyanna Commings, Elite Taekwondo; and Andrew Young, Elite Taekwondo.

Team Nevada Taekwondo athletes competing in Atlanta who did not fight in the league this year were Jack Guior, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Christopher Marshall, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Jordin Ramirez, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Miah Strellnauer, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Samuel Benson, Two Dragons Taekwondo; Melissa Chua, Two Dragons Taekwondo; and Arthur Paesch, non-affiliated.

The eight division champions for the 2005-06 season were Devin Neudeck, 14- to 17-year-old Black Belts; Zack Alba, 6-13 Black Belts; Tayler Packer, 14-17 Advanced; Micah Alba, 6-13 Advanced; Audrey Martin, 14-17 Intermediate; Briana Blue, 6-13 Intermediate; Henry Monzon, 14-17 Novice; and Morgan Packer, 6-13 Novice.

TENNIS

Hanna headed to Rockhurst University

Brittany Hanna, a recent graduate of Coronado High School, accepted a scholarship to play tennis at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., in the fall.

Hanna, who went undefeated in regular season play for the Cougars, played for Coronado's 2003 state championship team and was the team's captain during her junior year.

Hanna has been a nationally ranked tennis player over the past six years.

She graduated with high honors, is on the national honor roll and is a member of the National Society for High Schoolers. Hanna also appears in the current issues of "Who's Who Among American High School Students" and "Who's Who Among American High School Students, Sports Edition."

TRACK & FIELD

Desert Pines' Cole headed to Northridge

Desert Pines High School's Reindell Cole has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Northridge in the fall.

Cole was the Nevada Class 4A state champion in the long jump and finished second in the high jump in May.
