Exhibit to spotlight Chinese artists

A free art exhibition titled "Across the Divide" is being displayed at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North, through Sept. 3.

Curated by artist and professor Yu Ji, the exhibition showcases the work of Chinese artists who teach in American universities. For more information, call 229-4674.

Spoken word event set at arts center

The West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd., is set to host The Poet's Corner at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

The free event will be hosted by Keith Brantley and Pendelita Toney, and will feature readings by established poets. The evening also will include an open mic portion.

'Finding Nemo' next up in kids' series

The East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave., is set to continue its free Summer Youth Film Series with a showing of "Finding Nemo" at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The G-rated animated movie features the voices of Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks and Willem Dafoe in a story about a clown fish named Nemo and his adventures after being stolen from his underwater home.

In addition, the center also will continue its Summer Latin Film Series with a showing of "El Cartero de Neruda/Il Postino" at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The film centers around an author named Neruda who seeks solitude on an Italian island, and postman Mario seeks to become an author.

Educational concert to allow input from kids

The Children's Summer Concert Series will continue with a performance of "Stomp Your Feet," set for 2 and 7 p.m. on Friday at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

The upbeat program by the Amy Lowe Trio will feature interactive, educational songs, ranging from the silly to the serious for the whole family.

Brass band to play at courthouse

The Vegas City Brass is set to perform from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday at the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse, 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The performance is free. Attendees are welcome to bring a sack lunch, and refreshments will be available.

SAFETY

National Night Out scheduled in NLV

The city of North Las Vegas will host an America's Night Out Against Crime -- National Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Hartke Park.

The annual event strives to encourage crime and drug prevention and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and the North Las Vegas Police Department.

The event is free and will include food, crime prevention information, entertainment and children's activities. Hartke Park is located at the corner of Tonopah Avenue and McDaniel Street. For more information, call 633-2199.
