BASKETBALL

Durango YMCA offers adult league

The Durango Hills Community Center run by the YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, is offering an adult basketball league from 6 to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays through Aug. 8. The cost is $500 per team, which includes referee fees for each game. Participants must be at least 18.

Youth league teams forming at YMCA

Boys and girls ages 6-15 can compete in the summer basketball league at the Durango Hills Community Center run by the YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive. Teams are formed based on age groups. The focus is on skill development and fun.

The summer league runs through Aug. 19. One-hour practices will be held Monday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings. Games are played Friday evenings between 6 and 9 p.m., and Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. The cost is $85. For more information or to register, call Kim Gradisher at 839-4907.

Overnight camp planned at YMCA

Youth ages 8-13 are invited to participate in the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA overnight basketball camp from 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. on July 28-29. Participants will practice passing and shooting, and watch films. The $50 camp cost includes dinner and breakfast.

FOOTBALL

NYFL holds sign-ups for tackle teams

The Nevada Youth Football League is holding registration for full contact football for the fall 2006 season. Registration can be conducted at the league office at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

When signing up, participants must have either a player ID card from the NYFL or an original birth certificate and utility bill. For the Youth Division, ages 6-14, registration costs $180, with payment in cash or money order only. Players must be present for weigh-in and accompanied by a parent. Practice starts the first week in August, with games running from September to mid-November. The NYFL also is accepting applications for experienced coaches for the upcoming season. Academy schedules summer camps

The Summerlin Junior Golf Academy will be holding weekly camps from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday. The SJGA also will hold camps from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Angel Park hosting Pro-Scratch tourney

The 2006 Las Vegas Pro-Scratch golf tournament will take place July 30 (Mountain course) and July 31 (Palm course) at Angel Park Golf Club, 100 S. Rampart Blvd. Two-person teams comprised of one professional and one scratch amateur will compete in a "one best ball of two" format for a total purse of more than $12,000.

The team entry fee is $300 and includes unlimited practice balls prior to play, two drink tickets per player, lunch following the first round and continental breakfast prior to final round.

Volunteers needed for Fry's.com Open

The Fry's.com Open is seeking volunteers for the event set for Oct. 12-15 at TPC Summerlin and TPC at the Canyons. Volunteers will need to pay a $25 fee to defray expenses and will get a tournament pass for all tournament days as well as one for a guest. Participants will be invited to a post-volunteer tournament party.

YMCA's Itty Bitty session starts July 25

Little kickers ages 3-5 can learn soccer fundamentals along with their parents -- parent participation is required -- at the Durango Hills Community Center run by the YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive. The program will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays from July 25 to Sept. 12.

SOFTBALL

Vegas Lights teams play well at state

Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association's Southeast Vegas Lights tournament teams performed well in the recent Nevada State Tournament.

The Vegas Lights 12-and-under "B" team placed second and qualified for the national tournament in Midland, Texas, set for the first week of August. The team is coached by Chris Chapman and includes Johanna Benton, Karlie Camardella, Diana Cassaro, Natasha Chapman, Lee Harrison, Alyssa Mendoza, Megan Patras, Briona Santovito, Lindsay Seberry, Aricia Dami, Daira Eamon, Alex Battest and Desmond Sanchez.

The team is trying to raise $15,000 for its trip to the nationals. Any corporate or individual sponsors wishing to help the team can send checks payable to SNFA Southeast to P.O. Box 230315, Las Vegas 89105, or call Chris Chapman at 616-9288.

Vegas Lights' 12-and-under "C" team placed second and qualified for the regionals in San Diego, while the 10-and-under "B" team finished second at state and qualified for the regional tournament in Atwater, Calif.

Southeast league holding fall sign-ups

The Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association's Southeast league will be holding sign-ups for its fall season over the next month. Registration will be held at 8 p.m. on July 25 and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 5 at Round Table Pizza, 8878 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 104. Registration also will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Vito's Italian Eatery, 10345 S. Eastern Ave.

SNFA Southeast will hold its league draft from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 19 at Desert Bloom Park, 8405 S. Maryland Parkway. Anyone signing up that day will be charged a $10 late registration fee. Tryouts for players 14 and under will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.; players 12 and under from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and from 1 to 3 p.m. for players 10 and under.

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is hosting four-week summer swimming sessions. A variety of programs are offered for infants through adults. Lesson days and times vary by program.

TAEKWONDO

Locals headed to Junior Olympics

Team Nevada Taekwondo sent 17 youths to the 2006 USA Taekwondo Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships held July 6-9 in Atlanta.

Team Nevada Taekwondo athletes who received checks for $216 from the League Athlete Support Fund are Micah Alba, Mesquite Taekwondo Center; Zack Alba, Mesquite Taekwondo Center; Niel Anderson, Clark County Taekwondo Club; Brianna Bordon, Elite Taekwondo; and Cynthia Neudeck, Academy of Taekwondo.

Other Nevada Youth Olympic Taekwondo League athletes who competed in Atlanta were Devin Neudeck, Academy of Taekwondo; Rommel Viray, Academy of Taekwondo; Chloe Acosta, Elite Taekwondo; Keyanna Commings, Elite Taekwondo; and Andrew Young, Elite Taekwondo.

Team Nevada Taekwondo athletes competing at Atlanta who did not fight in the league this year were Jack Guior, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Christopher Marshall, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Jordin Ramirez, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Miah Strellnauer, Desert Sun Taekwondo; Samuel Benson, Two Dragons Taekwondo; Melissa Chua, Two Dragons Taekwondo; and Arthur Paesch, non-affiliated.

The eight division champions for the 2005-06 season were Devin Neudeck, 14-17 Black Belts; Zack Alba, 6-13 Black Belts; Tayler Packer, 14-17 Advanced; Micah Alba, 6-13 Advanced; Audrey Martin, 14-17 Intermediate; Briana Blue, 6-13 Intermediate; Henry Monzon, 14-17 Novice; and Morgan Packer, 6-13 Novice.

TRACK & FIELD

Guy named Gatorade Athlete of the Year

Western High School's Dell Guy was named the Gatorade Nevada boys track Athlete of the Year. The senior, who is headed to Texas Christian University in the fall, won both the 100 and 200 meters and helped the Warriors win the 1,600-meter relay at the state track and field meet in Reno in May. Guy also won the 200 and 400 events last year in the state meet.

VOLLEYBALL

Silver State Stars holding August camp

The Silver State Stars Volleyball Club will be hosting a volleyball camp for girls ages 14-15 on Aug. 1-4, and for ages 16-18 on Aug. 7-11 at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 S. Rancho Drive.

WRESTLING

Centennial camp registration under way

Centennial High School, 10200 Centennial Parkway, will be hosting the Las Vegas Premier Wrestling Camp on Aug. 2-4. The camp, for wrestlers entering high school, will feature instruction from world champion Lincoln McIlravy and Olympic champion Brandon Slay.

Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 to 4:30 p.m. daily with a lunch break from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The registration fee is $200. For more information, call Terry Moll at 580-5074.
