View welcomes announcements of recent achievements of Favorite Sons & Daughters who have graduated from local high schools. Achievements may run the gamut from earning a college degree to successfully climbing Mount Everest. Kimberly O'Barr was honored by the Signers chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution as the winner of the State Society's Knight Essay contest.
Kimberly, who attends Silverado High School, will represent the state of Nevada in the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution's Knight Essay contest.
Scott Christensen, 18, a senior graduating this month from Cimarron-Memorial High School, has been selected as student of the year by the Summerlin Lions Club.
The award and a $1,000 scholarship were presented at a ceremony May 23 at Christensen's high school.
During high school, Christensen served as senior class vice president and was a member of the National Honor Society. He played varsity volleyball and soccer, was a bowling team member and the junior varsity volleyball team captain. His involvement in Boy Scouts earned him an Eagle Scout award in 2002, and he is an accomplished piano student.
Christensen plans to attend Brigham Young University in the fall, where he will major in business/accounting. He is the son of Blair and Dianne Christensen of Las Vegas.
Chapter R. P.E.O. Scholarships has awarded $500 college scholarships to Kaitlin Godbey and Silvia Alejandra Mijares from Basic High School; Breanna Antila and Courtney Kerby from Foothill High School; Shipra De from Green Valley High School; and Lauren Boone from Southern Nevada Technical School.
Maia C. Kohl has been named to the merit list at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, with a grade point average of at least 3.45.
Kohl, a junior majoring in neuroscience and psychology, is a graduate of Rancho High School and is the daughter of James Kohl and Molly Millman, both of Las Vegas.
Mandy Overall, a senior at Cimarron-Memorial High School, has been accepted as an incoming freshman at Dana College in Blair, Neb., for the upcoming school year.
Overall is the daughter of Mary Palakovich and Tim Overall of Las Vegas.
